What Happened To Darth Vader’s Lightsaber After His Death?

During the time Anakin finally embraced the dark side, he faced Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was defeated by his master and his Jedi lightsaber was taken from him.

Perhaps Obi-Wan thought that Anakin was going to die eventually so he didn’t finish him off. Finally, Palpatine and his people found him, kept him alive and the final transformation of Anakin to Darth Vader was completed.

When Luke cuts off his father’s hand, the saber falls into the reactor shaft, too. Unfortunately, it isn’t known what happened to the saber but there are some possible clues as to what could have happened to the said weapon.

Star Wars

In the novel “Star Wars Aftermath”, there is mention about a junker who claims that he allegedly had Darth Vader’s lightsaber. Unfortunately, it isn’t confirmed if this is actually the authentic saber or not.

The junker was visited by the Acolytes of the Beyond. These individuals worshipped the dark side and the Sith.

After buying the saber, they reveal to him that they plan to destroy the lightsaber so it can be with Vader. However, whether or not they were being truthful is unknown.

After the Acolytes left, the junker actually reveals to his companion that he isn’t sure whether or not the saber actually belonged to Vader. With this end, what actually happened the lightsaber is still shrouded with mystery.

What Happened to Darth Vader's Lightsaber (Canon) - Star Wars Explained

As of now, there are five possibilities. The first is that it has been destroyed when it fell down the shaft. Second, the Acolytes have destroyed it. Third, the Acolytes have it and they lied about destroying it. Fourth, it’s still lost in space. Fifth, someone else has found it and we have yet to find out what happens to it.

Either way, George Lucas seems to enjoy making his audience to question and debate certain details within the story. These mysteries are what keeps the audience engaged and entertained in between releases of films.

When Did Darth Vader Make His Lightsaber?

Unfortunately, out of all the media resources and stories that Star Wars released in canon or in legends, there is no information on how he built his lightsaber. Still, we can pinpoint a timeframe in which he could have possibly made his weapon.

After becoming Darth Vader, the next instance that he is referenced with a red saber was in the novel “Lords of the Sith” by Paul S. Kemp. Now, thankfully, this novel is accepted in canon.

On page 108 of this novel, it reads, “The red line of Vader’s lightsaber flashed, deflecting the shots back at the Twi’lek, putting a dark hole in his chest and another in his face”. Clearly, the red line refers to the plasma blade.

The setting for this was actually 5 years after Episode III. Therefore, the time in which he built his red lightsaber was within 5 years after he became Darth Vader.

However, he actually lost this weapon during a fight in Cabarria where they attempted to assassinate him. After this event, he built another lightsaber.

Because this single-bladed weapon was a dual-phase Sith lightsaber, the length of the plasma blade could be adjusted even in the middle of a fight. With the right timing and technique, it’s easy to simply lengthen the blade to deal a fatal blow.

The cylindrical hilt is 28 centimeters in length and is made out of alloy metal and carbon composite materials. It makes use of 2 kyber crystals and is powered by a Diatium power cell.

We already know that as a child, Anakin was prolific with technology. So it’s no surprise that Darth Vader was able to continuously update his weapon.

Combat On Mon Cala

One year after the Empire rose to power, Darth Vader and the Inquisitorious was sent to Mon Cala to hunt down any remaining Jedi. Unluckily for them, they weren’t greeted with a warm welcome by the locals.

Instead, they were met with defiance. While the Sith were able to take over an outpost, the locals flooded the city and drove Vader away into the ocean. He escaped and returned to his forces.

Eventually, they find out the location of Ferren Barr, a Jedi Knight. Then, they also were tasked to capture the King of Mon Cala.

Once they got to where the King was, Vader used his saber to slash through the soldiers. He then captured the King.

Ferren Barr then faces Darth Vader. Unfortunately, he could not defeat the powerful Sith. The video below shows the events of the battle between Vader and Barr.

Combat On Profundity

Finally, we are well aware of the time Darth Vader hopped on the ship Profundity to recover the Death Star blueprint from the rebels. He used his red lightsaber to slash and hack at the rebels who were bravely defending their ship.

Fortunately, the rebel soldiers were able to relay the Death Star plan until it eventually reached the ship Tantive IV which successfully escaped in hyperspeed. Darth Vader failed in his attempt to take back the plans but the many deaths on Profundity were a dreadful price to pay.

Against Obi-Wan Kenobi

This was the same saber that Darth Vader used to kill Kenobi in Episode 4. In actuality, Obi-Wan sacrificed himself to allow his comrades to escape safely.

If he put up a fair fight, perhaps he would have survived and even injured or defeated Vader. Unfortunately, the circumstances were tight. Nevertheless, he was able to come back as a Force ghost.

Against His Son, Luke Skywalker

Again, this lightsaber was used in the duel against his own flesh and blood. In the iconic “I am your father” scene, Darth Vader actually cut Luke’s hand off with this same saber.

But of course, Luke returned the favor and severed his father’s hand in Episode VI. His saber fell into the shaft and was lost. And, as we all know, Luke successfully took back his father to the light and Darth Vader was able to kill Sidious.

In Conclusion

After Luke cuts off Vader’s hand and fell into the shaft with the lightsaber, the weapon could have been obliterated in the explosion or it may have survived.

As of today, what exactly happened to Darth Vader’s lightsaber is unknown, and fans are left to speculate and form their own theories.
