Ranking the 10 Scariest Star Wars Characters

Ranking the 10 Scariest Star Wars Characters

From the movies to shows, audiences have seen plenty of scary Star Wars characters. Some like Darth Maul frighten us with their deadly look and demeanor.

Others, like the Nightsisters, strike fear into us just from their presence. From Sith to monsters, this franchise provides plenty of scary moments and characters.

Here we count down the 10 scariest Star Wars characters.

10. Jabba the Hutt

As a crime boss, Jabba the Hutt is a powerful character in the Star Wars universe. Because of his snail-like look, he is also scary, especially for younger viewers.

Up until The Return of the Jedi, Jabba ran the illegal operations of Tatooine and the Outer Rim planets.

He belongs to a sluggish species and a family of gangsters. With a slimish green drool usually running down his lip, Jabba works with smugglers, like Han Solo, and bounty hunters, such as Boba Fett.

Jabba first appears in the revised version of A New Hope as a bossy figure trying to tell Han what to do. He may be more grotesque than scary but still earns a spot on this list.

9. Dark Troopers

A new addition to the Galactic Empire, Dark Troopers are relentless ultra-fierce versions of stormtroopers.

Similar to Sentry Droids, Dark Troopers are dispatched under Moff Gideon’s Imperial remnant. As they take on Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, they are deadly and overwhelming.

These troopers work their way into Star Wars as battle machines ready to dispatch with anyone in their path and almost succeed with Mando.

In their unmatched droid power, they are a force to be reckoned with.

8. Asajj Ventress

The first of two bounty hunters to make this list, Asajj Ventress is as lethal as she is scary. Ventress was first an assassin under the Nightsisters before she became a bounty hunter. She was known for her dark Force skills and dual lightsaber maneuvers that made her a deadly opponent.

Ventress’s fearsome look and ability to work with both the Nightsisters and bounty hunters reflect her scariness. Her ice-blue eyes and white skin give the impression of the dead moving about the Star Wars universe.

7. Bossk

This second bounty hunter brings us back to The Empire Strikes Back. Bossk is a reptilian humanoid with lizard-like skin.

As a Trandoshan, he is also known for his hunting skills and great strength. This combination makes him threatening and scary.

Although Bossk only appeared briefly in the second Star Wars movie, he became a larger character in The Clone Wars television series. He worked with a bounty hunter group known as Krayt’s Claw under Boba Fett. Bossk also became known for the distasteful role of hunting down Wookiees.

Bossk has a scary reptilian look, occasional hisses, and evil tendencies that earn him a spot on this list.

6. Thrawn

With his return in the Ahsoka series, Grand Admiral Thrawn displayed his high-ranking scariness. He is an intelligent, scheming imperial officer who looks menacing with his blue face, red eyes, and scowling expression.

As Grand Admiral of the Imperial Navy during the Empire, Thrawn proved himself to be ruthless and valuable to Emperor Palpatine. As Wookiepeedia states, Palpatine thought Thrawn and Vader were his two most “useful servants.”

With that allegiance, Thrawn took the fight to the rebels, as depicted in the animated Star Wars Rebels show. When he returned to the live-action Ahsoka, he appeared even more sinister.

5. The Nightsisters

Coming straight from Halloween, the Nightsisters are magical, sinister, and quite scary. Led by Mother Talzin, these Witches of Dathomir conjure dark energy magic and lurk in the shadows of the Star Wars universe.

The Nightsisters cast their spells and use their magic outside the boundaries of the Empire and Rebellion. Talzin is the mother of Asajj Ventress and Darth Maul, both scary in their own right. She did work with Darth Sidious for a time until the Emperor turned on her. Many of the Nightsisters perished with the rise of the Empire.

Yet, we saw them return in the Ahsoka series, more sinister than ever. They work alongside Thrawn to claim power over the galaxy. This show brings out the “lore” and threat of these witches once more, in their strange homeworld of Peridea. One glance at this coven makes audiences shake.

4. Rancor

The official description of a rancor captures why this character earns a spot on this list. Rancors are “towering hulks” with “a salivating, tooth-filled maw” and “armored skin” that deflects blaster shots. They are virtually unstopped beasts that fill opponents with terror.

As reptilian carnivores, Rancors conjure up a combined fear of crocodiles and King Kong. They typically stand between 4 and 5 meters, or 13 to 16 feet, and weigh about 1,650 kg or 3,638 lbs. Rancors also tend to be aggressive when confronted.

In Return of the Jedi, Luke almost gets devoured by a rancor underneath Jabba the Hutt’s palace. In this same scene, a rancor does succeed in eating a Gamorrean guard.

We also get a sense of how scary this character is in The Mandalorian when a rancor terrorizes Mos Espa. Luckily in both instances, disaster is averted: Luke manages to kill the rancor he faced, while Grogu calms the second one down by using the Force.

To be fair, rancors are not automatically hostile. We get a sense of the calmer side in the Book of Boba Fett series. Still, a rancor ranks as one of the scariest Star Wars characters.

3. Darth Maul

Darth Maul

Just one look at Darth Maul sends fear into audiences and Jedi alike. With horns protruding from his head and a red and black face, Maul provides an immediate sense of evilness.

His sinister background includes being a crime lord and Sith apprentice and assassin under Darth Sidious. With his anger and passion, Maul emanates the dark side of the force.

His brutal fighting and lightsighter skills likewise showed his fearful side, including when he took the life of Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn. His dual-bladed lightsaber adds to his skills and frightening appearance.

Even when Maul was cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi, he managed to survive with an even scarier spidery lower body.

After his return during the Clone Wars. Maul goes on to lead the Shadow Collective crime syndicate posing a challenge to even Sidious as well as the rest of the galaxy.

2. Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine

Darth Sidious, a.k.a Darth Sidious, could be the most evil of Star Wars villains and almost the scariest.

This top Sith Lord arose in secret and brought about the Empire. He ordered the destruction of the Jedi and showed no remorse for any of his dark side actions.

His use of force lightning is one reason Darth Sidious is frightening. Force lightning or Sith lightning is a unique dark-side power that sends blasts of electricity at opponents.

The powerful Emperor is renowned for casting them at Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi.

Even after his presumed death, when Luke threw the Emperor down a reactor shaft, Sidious rose again in a cloned body.

Planning for possible failure, Sidious created a contingency plan for a rebirth of the Sith. His return in The Rise of Skywalker added to his mystique and evilness.

Some lists give Sidious the top spot partly because of his appearance, but more because of his cunning evil ways, such as swaying Anakin to the dark side and killing his own master.

He almost took the number one spot here but his apprentice earns that place.

1. Darth Vader

Darth Vader

As the original villain, Darth Vader still reigns supreme as the scariest character in Star Wars.

From his first entrance on the captured rebel ship in A New Hope, Vader struck fear into opponents and allies alike. His breathing and deep voice accompanied a fearsome presence that shook stormtroopers, rebels, and Jedi.

In Rogue One, Vader reprises this scene when he boards the same rebel ship as it makes its escape with the Death Star plans. We can see the heightened elements of fear, with rebels screaming and scrambling for their lives.

Even his suit is intimidating. Vader’s suit provides his life support system, but it also inspires “fear and terror” in anyone he encounters.

His armor, or suit, is durable and protective, but along with his helmet and mask, iit helps establish the most terrifying presence in Star Wars.

Other articles support this top position for Vader, with one stating how he “plunges the Star Wars universe into an abyss of horror.”

Vader kills his commanders at will and is a creation of rage and darkness that shows no mercy, that is until Return of the Jedi when Luke and he make amends.

Yet, most of his time in the Star Wars galaxy is about striking fear into everyone. Darth Vader continues to be the top villain.
