7 Absurdly Obscure Star Wars Details

7 Absurdly Obscure Star Wars Details

As fans, easter eggs and hidden details are common in Star Wars. However, some items are so quick on the screen or concealed that they warrant extra attention. Here is a list of 7 of those absurdly obscure details.

1. Jawas Have Humans Working for Them

This absurdly obscure detail is easy to miss in A New Hope. As we can see in this video (at 0:50), the Jawas who came to sell droids to the Lars had a human working for them. As the clip zooms in, we can see his hands and partially his face as this individual works on the base of a droid. It seems that “at least in rare cases, we can expect to find other species” with the Jawas.

That could come as a surprise, or not as much after watching The Book of Boba Fett. In this scene, we see Peli Motto speaking the Jawas’s language and saying that she had dated a Jawa. The interaction between humans and Jawas could be more frequent and extensive then.

This makes more sense given that Jawas are humanoids, and those living on Tatooine needed their services. Then again, as “scavengers” of droids or parts, moisture farmers like the Lars household were “wary of their goods,” but ended up buying them because of their isolated location in the galaxy.

The Ugnaught Kuiil appeared to have interacted with Jawas regularly. In this scene from The Mandalorian, he seems to have often worked with, but not for, them. So, interactions could be very common, but a human working for Jawas stands out.

2. Return of the Blast Shield Helmet

The above video (at 3:16) also points out a unique detail about re-used prop helmets from the Battle of Yavin in Empire Strikes Back. We can detect a Rebel pilot using the same helmet that Luke had used for his lightsaber training on the Falcon. The “alien text markings” on the side help identify it.

What’s interesting here is that the helmet could have been given to the Rebels, or other helmets may have these types of markings. Either one seems plausible because it seems like Luke used a normal pilot helmet with a blast shield put on it for training purposes. It would make sense that it either found its way back to the Rebels or others had similar markings.

We see the helmet hanging on the wall in the training scene and may wonder instead how Han got it. Nonetheless, this helmet is not too different from other starfighter helmets, it just appears more stripped down, and maybe the markings indicate it’s for training purposes. Yet, it’s very Star Wars-like to have it show up again in the next movie.

3. Lando Loses His Gloves

Among the fascinating easter eggs in this video, the one where Lando Calrissian loses his gloves is quite obscure. It occurs when he falls from the skiff toward the Sarlacc pit (shown at 30:25). As Lando first falls and hangs from the rope, he has black gloves on. Yet, in the next moment, when we see the actor Billy Dee Williams more clearly, Lando’s hands are bare. The close-up shots of the sand banking also show Lando without gloves.

220 Things You Somehow Missed In Star Wars Films

While we can dismiss this detail as a mix-up with the stunt-double, we could also think that Lando quickly took off his gloves once he fell further. Being Lando, he may have even discarded them to appear braver as he struggled to survive.

But the out-of-universe explanation makes more sense and is similar to this mix-up with Lando’s costume badge in Return. Star Wars also has obscure mistakes.

4. Remnants of the Wampas at Echo Base

At number 9 on this list of hidden Star Wars details is a remnant of a deleted scene with hidden Wampas at Echo Base. The warning sign is quite small, almost unnoticeable, but conveys that Empire was going to have Wampas attacking the Rebels and maybe some coming after the invading stormtroopers.

We can get a better idea of the deleted scene here and why it was cut from the film. From behind the ice, the Wampas could have been threatening. But, in full view, they come off as clumsy Big Foots. Yet, it’s a great detail that the creators left a reminder of their presence.

5. Maul’s Lack of Blinking

Dedicated fans may have caught this detail from The Phantom Menace–Darth Maul only blinks once in the movie. Well, it’s three separate blinks during the one fight scene. If we’re counting, Maul’s first blink is when Kenobi sliced his lightsaber in two. The other two blinks come when Obi-Wan severs him in half.

We could say the lack of blinking reflects Maul’s menacing character, and the sparse blinks reveal his surprise at being taken down. We should also recognize how the actor and stuntman Ray Park wore uncomfortable, colored contact lenses that made blinking difficult.

6. TIE Fighter Pilot and the Asteroid Field

This video compilation points out a detail in Empire Strikes Back that is doubly hard to catch. After one of the pursuing TIE Fighters of the Millennium Falcon smashes into an asteroid (at 2:10), we can briefly spot the pilot being thrown into space and presumably to perish.

As fans in this discussion state, we could easily mistake the pilot for a piece of debris cast off from the explosion. That this unlucky pilot is included in the scene underscores the danger of entering an asteroid field. Like Han, we wouldn’t want to know the odds of survival.

7. John Williams’s Props in Rise of Skywalker

Astute fans probably spotted John Williams’s cameo role in Rise of Skywalker. Yet, we may have missed all the easter-egg items that accompanied him in his bartender role.

This Star Wars Explained video briefly conveys the story behind the Oma Trace character, and that around Williams were 51 props to reflect his music scoring career. Accompanying him were such items as mini-barrels from Jaws and a whip from Indiana Jones.

Who did John Williams play in The Rise of Skywalker?

These props were made to resemble “various bits of a Droid shop junk” as a tribute to his Academy Award nominations. These hidden props were only revealed to Williams on the day of filming.
