Actor Temuera Morrison and Star Wars
Appearing at the recent Tampa Bay Comic Convention, actor Temuera Morrison let people know that he is not currently scheduled to be in any Star Wars programs or movies. The Boba Fett actor, who had been involved in the franchise for a couple of decades, also let it be known that he could use fan support.
He asked fans “to send a fax, or a letter or an email to those powers that be at Lucasfilm” to urge that he be given “another chance.” Morrison’s apparent falling out with Star Wars comes on the heels of the lackluster response to The Book of Boba Fett.
Temuera’s appeal caught the attention of fans in this Reddit discussion. The opening post supports this move, indicating how the “middling reception” to the series was not his fault and that “he deserves another shot.” Others agreed, arguing that the actor “deserves better than he got with Book of Boba Fett.”
Yet, other posts have reservations, not about the actor, but about how the character of Boba Fett would be portrayed. They raise the point that it makes sense to bring Temuera back to the small or big screen if “he’s an actual Bounty Hunter doing Bounty Hunter stuff.” That is, many fans disagreed with the shift away from “badass Boba in Mando season 2 to this bizarre character” in The Book of Boba Fett.
These combined remarks raise good points to consider. One, Temuera Morrison shouldn’t be punished for a series that went off track. Two, if he is brought into another series or movie, Boba Fett should return to his roots as a bounty hunter.
Why Should Boba Be More Hard-Edged?
Although some fans may have appreciated how The Book of Boba Fett explored a new path for Boba, more aligned with a “good guy” role, this move undermined Boba’s stature as a ruthless bounty hunter. That fearsomeness was the basis of the character, and returning to it could catapult Boba and Temuera back into the spotlight.
The Boba Fett of The Empire Strikes Back had a mystique to him, partly from his look and partly from his lack of dialogue. With his “green gauntlets, a green jetpack,” and other costume elements, Boba stood out as the premiere bounty hunter. His sparse four moments of dialogue completed the intimidation factor, with perhaps the best line being, “He’s no good to me dead.”
Boba carried on as his father had, although Jango Fett came later in development. Boba’s origin is as “a fearsome bounty hunter, indomitable survivor, and a man of few words.” First conceived as a “super trooper” for Empire, Boba first surfaced in sketches with “painted and chipped” “white armor”, with “a poncho” over his shoulder. This characterization not only shows the elements that a new show may follow, but also that The Book of Boba Fett tried to do.
Like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett included western themes and characterizations. Since this show was “aesthetically and thematically inspired by the classic Western genre,” we may agree with associating it with Clint Eastwood’s The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Yet, the ugly part could be instead how Boba turned into a kind of soft-hearted sheriff.
In a revived role, Boba should be hard-edged, not just to be true to his character, but also to extend him in new directions. Part of the problem with The Book of Boba Fett was its tendency to rely on “flashback scenes.” True, it was interesting to see Boba escape from the Sarlacc pit, but we didn’t see him fully emerge within “the crime drama” format.
Instead of an homage to Boba’s past, a new series or movie could delve into bounty-hunter action that fans find appealing. One fan here may have phrased it the best by stating, “I just wanted a bounty hunting show” in the previous effort. A reprised role for Temuera Morrison would have to do that and more.
Temuera Morrison and Boba Fett
Temuera Morrison’s appeal to return as Boba Fett has received support from fans. Yet, many would also like to make sure that the character departs from the depiction in The Book of Boba Fett. If we do see Morrison’s return, exploring the bounty hunter core makes most sense.
