I recently rewatched Revenge of the Sith, and I noticed a small but fascinating detail that you wouldn’t believe at first glance.
If you remember the battle on Utapau, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s mission was to take down General Grievous—a crucial step for the Republic to end the Clone Wars.
Upon arrival, Obi-Wan locates Grievous and engages him in an intense lightsaber duel.
With Grievous wielding four lightsabers, the fight becomes a true test of skill, but Obi-Wan eventually gains the upper hand, forcing Grievous to retreat.
As Grievous flees on his Tsmeu-6 personal wheel bike, Obi-Wan mounts his trusty varactyl, Boga, and gives chase.
During the pursuit, however, something interesting happens—Obi-Wan drops his lightsaber.
Now, this is where things get really interesting on the rewatch.
The lightsaber lands near Commander Cody, who is leading the clone troopers to support Obi-Wan’s mission.
Given how long Cody has served alongside Obi-Wan, he instantly recognizes the fallen weapon and bends down to pick it up.
At that exact moment, as Cody stoops to retrieve the lightsaber, a blaster bolt zips through the air, right where his head would have been moments before.
By sheer coincidence, Cody’s act of retrieving Obi-Wan’s lightsaber saves him from being shot.
This small, seemingly insignificant moment takes on a new meaning when you consider that Commander Cody, just moments later, would receive Order 66, turning against Obi-Wan and trying to kill him.
In a way, Obi-Wan’s dropped lightsaber inadvertently protected Cody from danger, a subtle twist of irony given how their relationship would soon change.
You can check out this detail at the 1:31 timestamp in the video below.
Shortly after this incident, Commander Cody receives Order 66 from Emperor Palpatine.
This order commands all clone troopers to turn against their Jedi generals, marking the beginning of the Jedi Purge.
Despite his loyalty to Obi-Wan, Cody is compelled to follow the order and orders his troops to fire on Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan narrowly escapes the attack, thanks to his quick reflexes and the loyalty of his varactyl, Boga.
