Andor is full of surprises and hidden gems. In the final episodes, there is an unexpected easter egg that you may have missed. You have to look closely, but Darth Maul’s face is placed within a mural on Ghorman. This reference helps connect the show to Maul and the franchise.
Maul Easter Egg in Andor
Recently, fans picked up on a hidden easter egg in “a silk-spinning spider creature mural on Ghorman.” As we can see in the posted image, Darth Maul’s face is embedded in the design. You could have missed it, but it appears like Maul is “grinning from ear to ear.”
Production designer Luke Hull provided this image on Instagram. This article also spotlighted how the mural of a Ghorlectipod, or Ghorman spider, contains Maul’s face in “the body of the spider”. The crossover is intriguing since, as we know, Maul had been transformed into a half-cybernetic spider after Kenobi severed him in two.
Placing Maul’s face in the Ghorman spider could serve as a way to connect with Andor’s use of spiders in the show. Ghorlectipods are a fascinating aspect of the planet Ghorman, and Maul’s survival on Lotho Minor as an arachnid-of-sorts provided new dimensions to this character. Both topics resonate well together.
Although “it wouldn’t have made sense for Darth Maul to appear” in Andor, paying homage to him in this way appeals to long-term Star Wars fans. It is not only a “cool” extra, but also coincides with how Maul has been placed in other scenarios, such as a cameo in the Solo movie. Maul’s easter egg appearance thus subtly links the franchise together.
Maul’s Own Show
The appearance of Maul’s face could also be a way to pique fan interest about his own show set to debut next year. After speculation about Maul as the next villain to get his own series, Lucasfilm announced that indeed he would get an animated series, Maul – Shadow Lord, on Disney+ in 2026.
The Maul series will have Sam Witwer, who voiced Maul’s character in The Clone Wars, return to the action. Set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, Maul will reforge his criminal empire. The show was announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan in April of this year. So, a tie-in with the final episodes of Andor in May makes a lot of sense.
Perhaps by spotting Maul’s grinning face, we could get excited about this next show. The Maul series is certainly generating interest, as reflected in articles like this one, hoping to see him battle Inquisitors and connect Rebels and The Clone Wars. The trailer provided for attendees of the Celebration was enough to send fans into “a rapturous ecstasy” about a character with “unexpected lasting power.” The easter egg probably hasn’t provoked the same response, but does fit with Andor.
Easter Eggs in Andor
Beyond the franchise and new show, Maul’s appearance coincides with Andor’s use of other easter eggs in the series. In Season 2, the list includes an AT-ST toy in Episode 3, a Loth cat in Episode 10, and a Naboo headdress. In Luthen Rael’s gallery, we find an overwhelming amount of “artifacts that connect to the larger Star Wars saga.” A Sith chalice, Wookiee shields, and Mandalorian armor (from Season 1) are among the fascinating items that resonate with Maul’s appearance.
Besides Maul’s face, other items we may have missed in Andor include using the date 5 BBY in the opening episode (a first for Disney+), a stuffed Bantha, and Republic LAAT ships, the latter a throwback to Attack of the Clones. The surprising and connecting goes onward and situates the Maul egg nicely.
Maul’s Easter Egg
While we may have missed it at first, Maul’s easter egg in Andor resonates with this show, his own series, and the larger franchise. We may not initially think about these dimensions, but they are there, lurking behind Maul’s dark smile. We can look forward to seeing that face again next year.
