How Did Captain Rex Resist Order 66 And Not Immediately Shoot Ahsoka Tano?

One of the most powerful moments in The Clone Wars is seeing Rex try to hold himself together when Order 66 begins. He still turns on Ahsoka, but not before forcing out a warning that changes everything: “Find Fives.” He is already being taken over by the inhibitor chip, yet he still manages to hold on for a few seconds and leave her one last clue. So how was Rex able to resist Order 66 long enough to not immediately shoot Ahsoka?

Rex Managed to Warn Ahsoka Because of Fives

The reason Rex was able to warn Ahsoka starts long before Order 66 itself. Earlier in The Clone Wars, Fives discovered the truth about the inhibitor chips placed inside the clones’ brains. He realized they were not just some harmless control measure, but something that could be used to force the clones to betray the Jedi. Fives tried to bring that information to Rex and Anakin, but before he could fully expose the conspiracy, Palpatine had him branded as dangerous and silenced.

Even though Fives died before he could make everyone understand what he had found, the incident clearly stayed with Rex. He knew Fives had uncovered something real, even if he did not yet have the full picture. So when Sidious finally gives Order 66 and the chip begins taking over, Rex is not reacting to the moment blindly. Part of him recognizes that this is exactly the kind of hidden trigger Fives had been trying to warn them about.

That is why Rex’s first instinct is not just to fire. For a few seconds, while the chip is overriding him, he fights hard enough to get one last message out to Ahsoka: “Find Fives.” He cannot stop the order, and he cannot explain everything in that moment, but he can still point her toward the one clue that matters. From there, Ahsoka is able to trace the truth, access Rex’s report on Fives, and realize that what is happening is not simply betrayal or choice. It is the inhibitor chip doing exactly what Fives said it would do.

Why “Find Fives” Was the Key

Rex’s warning to Ahsoka starts with what happened to Fives. Before Order 66 ever happened, Fives discovered that the inhibitor chips inside the clones were tied to a hidden plan against the Jedi. He tried to expose the truth, but before he could make others fully understand it, Palpatine had him silenced.

What mattered is that Rex never forgot that moment. He did not know the full story, but he knew Fives had uncovered something real. So when Order 66 begins and Rex suddenly feels himself losing control, his mind goes straight back to Fives. In that moment, he realizes the thing Fives was trying to warn them about is finally happening.

Ahsoka’s Bond With Rex Helped Him Resist Order 66

Rex’s resistance also makes more sense when you look at where he and Ahsoka stood during the Siege of Mandalore. By that point, Ahsoka was no longer even part of the Jedi Order, yet Rex still chose to stand with her. He divided the 501st and placed part of the legion under her command, even repainting their helmets to match her markings. That detail matters because it shows how personal their connection had become. Rex was not just following a Jedi general out of military duty. He was choosing to fight beside Ahsoka specifically.
