How Did Luke Get Yoda’s Lightsaber?

How Did Luke Get Yoda’s Lightsaber?

When Yoda battled Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith, he lost his lightsaber. Yet, in The Book of Boba Fett, Luke offered Grogu Yoda’s green lightsaber. How did he get it? It turns out that Yoda had more than one lightsaber.

In Episode 6 of The Book of Boba Fett, Luke showed Grogu Yoda’s green lightsaber. In this scene, we saw Luke and Grogu sit together to decide whether the latter would stay with Luke or not. Luke took a green lightsaber out of a box and indicated how it “belonged to [his] teacher, Master Yoda.” Luke offered it to Grogu, but Grogu ended up choosing the beskar armor and rejoined Mando.

So, how did Luke get Yoda’s lightsaber? After all, we saw Yoda lose it in the third prequel. And, the Darth Vader 1 comic from 2017 indicates how Sidious ordered the destruction of Yoda’s lightsaber. This occurred during a celebration of the Jedi’s eradication at the old Temple when his lightsaber was “thrown into the flames.” Hence, we should not be seeing this green lightsaber again.

However, a narrative evolved to explain this seeming discrepancy. This short video encapsulates the story by showing how Yoda actually had two lightsabers. We believed Yoda lost his one-and-only green lightsaber in his fight with Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith, and that Sidious destroyed it. Yet, in a canon book, we discover that Yoda hid a second lightsaber while he lived on Dagobah.

The book Star Wars: Complete Locations from 2016 divulges this information. This book is an update to the 2005 edition, includes a tour of Yoda’s home on Dagobah, and discloses how Yoda had another lightsaber “stored in a box” in his hut in the 3 ABY.

Wookieepedia likewise confirms how Yoda kept a second lightsaber that he had built as “a backup blade” hidden in his home. Luke came into possession of this lightsaber after Yoda died in 4 ABY. We assumed Luke decided to take it with him for his second encounter with Vader.

Yet, the lightsaber that Luke showed Grogu was smaller in size to fit Yoda’s hand and stature. So, Luke must have had two green lightsabers as well.

We remember how Luke lost his blue lightsaber in his fight with Vader in The Empire Strikes Back. As Vader vanquished Luke, he struck at Luke’s lightsaber and cut off his right hand, with the blue blade falling to the depths of Cloud City.

Afterward, Luke built a second lightsaber with a green blade. There is a separate story behind how Luke forged his green kyber crystal for his second weapon, but the point here is that it was his second and not Yoda’s lightsaber.

In Return of the Jedi, Luke used his green lightsaber against Jabba and Vader. Did Yoda ever use his second green lightsaber? He did not.

With most of the Jedi wiped out, Yoda went into hiding and did not engage in battle again. He used “a bow to hunt for food” and used “the Force instead of his blade” when necessary. He, likewise partially trained Luke, but probably did not tell him about his second lightsaber. Luke most likely discovered it after Yoda’s death.

Luke got Yoda’s second lightsaber on Dagobah. He later offered it to Grogu, who politely turned him down. Luke had his own second lightsaber that was likewise green. He shares that in common with Yoda, as well as the Force.
