Everyone remembers how Obi-Wan severed Darth Maul in half in The Phantom Menace. We presumed he fell to his death down a reactor shaft until we discovered that Maul survived and became a renewed dark force. How did he manage to survive the fall? By luck and the dark side.

How Did Maul Survive His Fall?
To find out how Maul managed to survive his fall, we can turn to fan comments on this topic. Responses here indicate that Maul landed in a trash container which provided a means to survive, along with landing in water first. In addition, we can recognize how Maul survived because his extreme hatred for Obi-Wan drove him to stay alive and get revenge.
Star Wars backs up that latter comment by stating Maul “survived his injuries by focusing his hatred” on Obi-Wan. We also get some supporting evidence of the trash container idea because Maul’s body “was dumped amid the refuse” on Lotho Minor. We assume that his split body was in a container beforehand.
Similarly, Maul managed to survive “his near-fatal injury thanks to the unnatural powers of the dark side.” And, more to the point, the comic The Clone Wars: The Sith Hunters depicts “Maul’s dismembered form falling into some sort of container” that was taken to the junk planet. So, both fan comments are on target for how Maul survived his fall.
Yet, we can back up the scene a little and show that there was more to his survival. According to the book The Wrath of Darth Maul, after falling down the reactor shaft, Maul lay on the shaft’s wall. He managed “to right his torso” and then he fell “past an oval shadow,” or “air vents.” He fell through another air vent too before tumbling into a watery trash container.
Maul had to first make it through these air vents before he had the luck of landing in the container. He also had to draw on his hatred for Obi-Wan to sustain him through the initial moments and the longer process of surviving in spider-like form and later with prosthetic limbs.
Why Did Maul Survive But Qui-Gonn Didn’t?
A related question is how Maul survived when Qui-Gon didn’t, with the answer connected to the above. Maul’s hate and anger fueled his quest to survive while Qui-Gon was not. Qui-Gon was willing to become one with the Force, but Maul was bent on revenge.
Some posts have described how Maul was “ravenous on thoughts of revenge” which “kept him going” even as he became insane. Maul also had some help. As this video recaps, Mother Talzin dispatched Savage Opress to aid him. Opress saved Maul from his madness, and the latter’s mind and body were restored on Dathomir.
In comparison, Qui-Gon not only suffered a lethal blow but also was willing to sacrifice himself and go with “the will of the Force.” In many ways, Qui-Gon and Maul run as mirror opposites of one another with the Force.
Maul’s Survival
Maul managed to survive his fall because of luck and his dark-side anger. An air duct, water, and a trash container helped initially. Driven by his hatred for Obi-Wan, he pushed forward to emerge from darkness once again.
