NHS Worker Wins £30,000 Compensation After Being Compared To Darth Vader

An NHS worker has been awarded nearly £30,000 after a workplace quiz led to an unexpected outcome.

Lorna Rooke, who worked at NHS Blood and Transplant, was away from her desk on a call during a Star Wars-themed Myers-Briggs-style personality quiz. A colleague completed the quiz on her behalf and later announced to the team that her result matched Darth Vader.

The quiz was based on categories like introversion, intuition, and decision-making. Darth Vader’s personality was described as “very focused” and capable of “bringing people together.” Lorna said the result made her feel isolated and uncomfortable, especially being linked to a villain known for controlling behavior and use of fear.

She cited the incident as one of the reasons she resigned from her role a month later.

The case was brought before an employment tribunal. Judge Kathryn Ramsden ruled in Lorna’s favor and stated:

“Darth Vader is a legendary villain of the Star Wars series, and being aligned with his personality is insulting.”

The tribunal found that the comparison contributed directly to Lorna’s resignation. She was awarded £28,989.61 in compensation. Her other claims, including unfair dismissal, discrimination, and failure to make reasonable adjustments, were dismissed.

The tribunal’s decision has since sparked widespread debate, with opinions split over whether the payout was justified. NHS Blood and Transplant has not commented on the ruling. While the quiz may have been intended as harmless fun, the case highlights how even casual workplace activities can lead to serious consequences.a
