Kylo Ren has always been a complicated figure in the Star Wars galaxy. Some see him as a wannabe Vader, others as a powerful Force user still trying to prove himself. But in the comics, we get a few moments that really show how far he’s willing to go—not just to earn fear and respect, but to prove he’s worthy of Darth Vader’s legacy.
There’s one comic in particular where Kylo takes on a challenge that would’ve crushed almost anyone else. What he does next might be one of the most brutal and unexpected things he’s ever done.
He wanted to prove he could succeed where Vader failed. And what better way to do that than by killing something Vader couldn’t?
Yep, that actually happened. In Star Wars: Age of Resistance – Kylo Ren #1, we see a canon moment where Kylo takes down a Zillo Beast by himself.
So apparently in the Comics Kylo Ren killed a Zillo Beast by himself

The comic opens with Kylo Ren heading to a Wild Space planet with an old Imperial vet named Captain Ruthford. Ruthford’s been here before—he fought these same aliens, the Benathy, back when Vader tried (and failed) to fully conquer them. Vader subdued them, but they came back. Now it’s Kylo’s turn to “finish what his grandfather started.”
Kylo Ren travels to a remote planet in Wild Space alongside a First Order admiral and an old Imperial officer named Captain Ruthford. Ruthford fought here years ago under Vader’s command during the Empire’s first encounter with the local species, the Benathy. These guys are huge, war-hungry warriors who respect strength above all else. The Empire tried to put them down, but when their so-called “god” showed up, things went south fast. That “god” turned out to be a Zillo Beast, and it wrecked everything. Vader couldn’t defeat it.
Now Kylo is back to do what his grandfather couldn’t. He’s here to either negotiate or conquer—and we already know which one he prefers.
When he meets with the Benathy king, things immediately go sideways. The king mocks Vader, wears stormtrooper helmets as trophies, and refuses to submit to the First Order. Kylo tries a mind trick, but it fails, so he straight-up impales the king with his lightsaber. Chaos breaks out in the throne room as Kylo cuts down the king’s bodyguards without breaking a sweat.
With negotiations off the table, the Benathy prepare for all-out war. But Kylo doesn’t flinch. He leads the First Order assault personally, and that’s when the Zillo Beast shows up—massive, nearly indestructible, and just as terrifying as we remember from The Clone Wars. It swats away troops and wraps itself around a First Order gunship like it’s nothing.
Everyone expects Kylo to retreat. Even Ruthford warns him this is suicide, that not even Vader could stop this thing. But Kylo isn’t about to back down. Instead, he flies a shuttle straight at the beast and jumps into its mouth with his lightsaber ignited.
And somehow… he wins.
He cuts through the Zillo Beast from the inside, killing it and emerging from its corpse covered in blood and glory. With their “god” dead, the Benathy kneel. Kylo declares that they now serve the First Order.
