In a recent interview, director Bryce Dallas Howard shared some fascinating insights into Episode 6 of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, titled Zero Friends Again.
Before we dive into the pivotal moment she revealed, here’s a quick spoiler warning: if you haven’t caught up on the series, it’s best to watch the episode first.
Spoiler Alert.
In an exclusive interview with Collider, Bryce Dallas Howard recounted a key scene where Jod Na Nawood is captured by pirates once again. During this moment, Jod unveils the secret of At-Attin, a hidden planet where old Republic credits are being manufactured.
If you’ve watched the episode, you might remember Jod singing a sea shanty about the legendary pirate Tak Rennod and his fabled treasure.
As Jod faces execution at the hands of Captain Brutus and his crew, he tries to buy himself time. He begins talking about hidden treasures and claims to know their location. The pirates, naturally, remain doubtful. To bolster his claim, Jod starts singing a sea shanty about Tak Rennod, a legendary pirate whose exploits are tied to the treasure he’s describing:
“Tak Rennod soared away, away,
Aboard the Onyx Cinder.
And never was he seen again,
And never was he seen again,
For At-Attin, he did plunder.”
Interestingly, this shanty wasn’t originally meant to be sung. In the script, it was written as a poem for Jod to recite. But Jude Law, who portrays Jod, had another idea. He suggested turning it into a song to fit the pirate theme and enhance the lore. Bryce Dallas Howard shared with Collider how this change came about:
“Tak Rennod soared, away, away… It was just supposed to be a poem, and Jude came in and he was like, ‘What do you think if I sang it? If it was a shanty? Because that’s kind of what pirates do, and that’s how the lore carries on.’ We were like, ‘Yes, please. We would like that very much, Jude Law.’”
With the way things are shaping up, Skeleton Crew is bringing some seriously fun and creative moments to the Star Wars universe. Jude Law turning a poem into a full-on pirate shanty? That’s just top-tier character work right there.
If you haven’t caught up yet, now’s the perfect time. The final episodes are probably airing as we speak, and trust me, you don’t want to miss how this all plays out. Grab a snack, queue it up, and let’s see where this wild ride takes us!
