‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ Will Get 50th Anniversary Theatrical Re-Release in 2027

2027 is shaping up to be a major year for Star Wars fans. Not only is Star Wars: A New Hope making its way back to theaters for its 50th anniversary, but Disney and Lucasfilm are also bringing two brand-new movies to the big screen — Star Wars: Starfighter and The Mandalorian and Grogu.

A New Hope Returns to Theaters

Mark your calendars: A New Hope is officially coming back to theaters on April 30, 2027, just days before Star Wars Day (May the 4th). Lucasfilm is calling this re-release part of its yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of Star Wars. This is the movie that started it all back in 1977, introducing audiences to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and the Force.

As StarWars.com put it, this is a “once-in-a-generation event,” and fans are encouraged to keep an eye out for ticket details closer to the date.

Star Wars: Starfighter Takes Off

Just a few weeks after that, a brand-new story is taking flight. Star Wars: Starfighter will hit theaters on May 28, 2027. The film is directed by Shawn Levy (Free Guy, Stranger Things) and will star Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in lead roles.

While plot details are still under wraps, this project is expected to open a new chapter in the Star Wars galaxy. Collider called it a “Millennium Falcon-sized event,” and Variety confirmed the casting and director as part of Disney’s latest push to bring fresh stories to the big screen.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Lead the Way in 2026

Before either of those hit theaters, we will get to see Din Djarin and Grogu on the big screen for the very first time. The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first Star Wars theatrical release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, is set to debut in 2026.

This movie will spin off from the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian and is expected to kick off a new era of theatrical Star Wars content. Disney has yet to share much about the plot, but just the idea of seeing Grogu — aka Baby Yoda — on the big screen is already creating plenty of buzz.

Since buying Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney has taken the Star Wars universe in many directions — some hits, some misses. But with the return of A New Hope, the promise of Starfighter, and the theater debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the next couple of years look like a solid lineup for both longtime fans and newcomers.

No word yet on whether A New Hope will be the original 1977 version or the updated special edition, but either way, we will finally get the chance to see the classic in theaters again — just where it belongs.
