The Canon Reason Ki-Adi-Mundi Has a Blue & Green Lightsaber

The Canon Reason Ki-Adi-Mundi Has a Blue & Green Lightsaber

I was rewatching Attack of the Clones the other day when something strange popped up during the Battle of Geonosis. For one quick shot, Ki-Adi-Mundi—who always fights with a blue lightsaber—suddenly has a green one.

It’s just a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but once you notice it, it feels out of place. Was it a hidden detail? A special weapon? Or just a mistake? Turns out, the real story behind that color switch is more interesting than you’d think—and yes, it’s actually canon now.

Ki-Adi-Mundi’s Lightsaber Turned Green for a Moment

If you’ve ever watched the Battle of Geonosis closely in Attack of the Clones, you might’ve noticed something weird—Ki-Adi-Mundi’s lightsaber flashes green for just a second. It happens in the middle of the chaos, during a shot where he’s standing back-to-back with Padmé Amidala. Right before and after that moment, though, his saber is clearly blue again.

That short green-blade scene was never meant to mean anything big. It was just a small production mistake. The VFX team gave him the wrong color in one shot, and it slipped through. At the time, there wasn’t any deeper story behind it.

So They Turned It Into Canon

Instead of leaving it as just an error, Lucasfilm later added it to official lore. Pablo Hidalgo came up with an explanation to make the scene fit into the universe. According to him, Ki-Adi-Mundi’s lightsaber actually has two kyber crystals—one blue, one green.

This idea ties directly into Mundi’s Cerean physiology, which is described in Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded. He has a “complex binary brain,” meaning his brain is split into two separate lobes that function independently. That unique brain structure allowed each side of his mind to bond with a different crystal when building his lightsaber.

So in canon now, the blade can shift between blue and green depending on how the saber is tuned—or maybe depending on which part of his mind is more dominant. And outside of that one green shot, every appearance shows him with the usual blue blade, which matches his calm and methodical personality.

He’s also one of only three Jedi High Council members with speaking roles in all three prequel films, and that blue lightsaber has become part of his visual identity.

The Arena Scene Still Leaves Some Questions

One part of the Geonosis battle still doesn’t line up perfectly. Mundi is shown being captured by the Geonosians, and we can assume they took his weapon. But later, when the clone troopers arrive, he has his lightsaber back again. There’s no clear moment where he gets it returned or picks up a new one.

Even Pablo Hidalgo admitted that this part raises questions. It’s not explained how he ends up with his saber again, especially if the Geonosians had taken it. That part of the story is left open.

Still, the idea of a dual-crystal saber bonded through a binary brain gives the original mistake a place in canon—and adds another unique detail to one of the Jedi Council’s most recognizable members.
