I’ve come across a lot of scary stuff in Star Wars lore, but the Anzati? They honestly creep me out the most. These are the kind of beings you hope you never run into in some backwater cantina or dark corner of the galaxy. They’ve been around forever, and there’s a reason so many cultures turned them into bedtime horror stories. But here’s the thing — the stories are true.

What Are Anzati Really?
At first glance, an Anzat just looks like an average pale-skinned humanoid. But hidden inside their cheeks are two long, thin tentacles — they call them proboscises. These things are the key to how they survive. When retracted, they pass as Human easily, which is terrifying because they can blend in anywhere.
Their homeworld is Anzat in the Mid Rim. They’re a super long-lived species, and in both Canon and Legends, they’ve been known to live for hundreds or even thousands of years. The crazy part? The older they get, the stronger their hunger becomes.
How They Feed (And Why It’s So Scary)
This is where it gets disturbing. Anzati feed on something they call “soup.” It’s not literal soup — it’s the life essence of sentient beings, which in Jedi terms is basically the Force energy of a person. The stronger the Force connection, the tastier the meal.
So how does it work? First, they isolate their prey. Then they use natural telepathic abilities, almost like a Jedi mind trick, to sedate or mesmerize their target. Once the victim is under their control, they extend their tentacles and feed. Usually, they insert them through the nose to access the brain cavity — but if they need to, they can go straight through the skull.
In Legends, some Anzati would even keep victims alive for multiple feedings, drawing out the process just to savor the experience. The stronger the person’s presence in the Force, the more satisfying the meal. It’s no surprise that they’ve been known to hunt Jedi specifically.
Are They Really Force Vampires?
Honestly, that’s the best way to describe them. They feed on life energy and Force essence, becoming stronger with each feeding. Jedi Masters who’ve studied them confirmed that the “soup” they drink is essentially the Force — or the future, as Jedi Master Zao put it in Legends.
This is why some Anzati deliberately go after Force-sensitives. Feeding on a powerful Jedi can give them a massive boost. It also explains why older Anzati are some of the most dangerous beings in the galaxy.
And if you’re wondering — yes, they’re physically dangerous too. They’re naturally stronger, faster, and more agile than most Humans. If their mind tricks don’t work, they can easily overpower you.
When Jedi Met Anzati
One of the best-known cases is Volfe Karkko, an Anzat Jedi Master from Star War: Darkness (Legends). For years, Karkko resisted the temptation to feed, thinking he could control it. But once he gave in and tasted “soup” for the first time, he was instantly addicted.
Karkko became a predator, draining his fellow Jedi and growing stronger after each meal. The Jedi High Council eventually hunted him down and put him in stasis on Kiffex.
But centuries later, he escaped by using his mind control abilities on nearby prisoners.
It took a Jedi task force, led by Quinlan Vos, to finally defeat him for good.
And this isn’t just some ancient history. In Battle of Jakku — Insurgency Rising 4 (Canon), Reyna Oskure is another great example. She used her Force abilities to manipulate and influence people around her, and when she faced Luke, she was fully prepared to fight. But Luke saw through her act — he recognized that she wasn’t a true Sith, just a dangerous Force-using predator.
He ended up defeating her in combat and exposing her identity.
But even after that, Reyna continued to play the political game behind the scenes. It shows just how persistent and cunning an Anzat can be.
The Anzat You Probably Saw Without Knowing
Here’s something I didn’t realize until I dug deeper: in A New Hope, there’s a pipe-smoking guy sitting in the Mos Eisley Cantina. That’s Dannik Jerriko (you can see him at 0:48 timestamp of the video below), an Anzat bounty hunter in Legends. He earned the nickname “Eater of Luck” and would straight-up feed on criminals, thieves, and anyone who wouldn’t be missed.
When Obi-Wan and Luke walked into the cantina, Jerriko sensed how powerful they were in the Force and seriously considered going after them. But once Obi-Wan took down a thug with his lightsaber, Jerriko decided it wasn’t worth the risk.
Now, in Canon, later sources described Jerriko as a mutant human — but the Legends version of his story is honestly way cooler and a lot more chilling.
How They Live And Why They’re So Feared
Anzati see themselves as hunters, and to them, most other beings are just potential prey. Young Anzati leave their homeworld around 100 years old to start hunting across the galaxy. And as they age, their craving for “soup” grows stronger and harder to control.
Some Anzati try to fight the addiction, but most eventually give in. The older ones can become unstable or even feral. In Legends, there were feral Anzati who followed Volfe Karkko and became monstrous in appearance and behavior.
Despite this, not all Anzati are mindless killers. Some pursue art, music, or even philosophy. But no matter how sophisticated they seem, the hunger is always there — and they know it.
What makes them truly terrifying is how they operate. They blend in, hunt silently, and strike when least expected. They can be assassins, bounty hunters, or just wanderers looking for their next meal. And they rarely work in groups, preferring to stay hidden.
Anzati have been around for so long that almost every culture has myths about them. The Jedi know firsthand how dangerous they are. A well-fed, ancient Anzat can rival even the most powerful Force users. And because they can live for centuries or more, some of them have accumulated terrifying amounts of experience.
I think that’s what really gets me about them — the idea that one could be sitting across from you at a bar, disguised as just another traveler, watching… waiting. The fact that they can hide among us is what makes them so dangerous. You’ll never know you’ve met one until it’s too late.
