When people think about the Force, the first things that come to mind are the basics—pushing objects, jumping higher than a human should, or pulling a lightsaber straight into your hand. But in the Star Wars Legends universe, the Force goes far beyond that. Some Jedi and Sith took their connection to the Force in strange, unexpected directions, uncovering powers that could reshape nature, time, or even the stars themselves.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the most unusual Force abilities ever recorded in the galaxy’s history.
Pyrokinesis
While most fans think of Force Lightning as the ultimate display of power, a few users learned to create and control fire through the Force. This ability was called Pyrokinesis. Some Jedi used it for simple tasks, like lighting candles in dark temples or controlling fire to prevent explosions from spreading. Darth Sidious himself knew how to wield it, though he preferred his trademark lightning in battle. On Endor, a witch once hurled small fireballs at Ewok villages using the same technique. It wasn’t the most destructive weapon, but it proved that fire could bend to the will of the Force too.
The Shapers of Kro Var
Far from the Jedi and Sith, a clan on Kro Var discovered their own way of using the Force. They called themselves Shapers, and they could command the elements—air, water, earth, and fire. Their style was more natural and physical than mystical. They didn’t bother with mind tricks or telekinesis; they bent nature itself. When the Jedi learned about them during the Clone Wars, they saw the Shapers as dangerous but not a major threat—more like the Nightsisters of Dathomir, to watch but not destroy.
Phase
A rare few Force users could step straight through solid matter. The ability, known as Phase, allowed them to pass through walls, doors, and barriers as if they were ghosts. The Jedi Master known as the Dark Woman mastered this strange technique. She was famous for suddenly appearing inside rooms at the Jedi Temple, startling everyone around her.
Wall of Light
Wall of Light was one of the most powerful light-side abilities in ancient Jedi history. Several Jedi working together could summon a radiant barrier of energy that purified darkness itself. It could cleanse areas soaked in the dark side and even cut off a Sith’s connection to the Force entirely. Once a dark user was caught inside it, they could lose their powers forever.
Teleport and Force Travel
Teleportation wasn’t just the stuff of myths. Some Force users mastered Teleport, allowing them to instantly move short distances, usually within their sight. Nightsisters often left behind a trace of green mist when they did it. But the bolder—and riskier—version was Force Travel. This ability tore open rifts through the galaxy, letting a user move from one world to another in seconds. The danger, though, was immense. One wrong move, and the traveler could end up floating in the void of space, never to return.
Flow-Walking
Among the mysterious monks called the Aing-Tii, there existed a power called Flow-Walking. It let a user step into the past or glimpse the future, walking through moments in time. They couldn’t change anything, but they could witness events exactly as they happened. Later, a few members of Luke Skywalker’s New Jedi Order learned the technique, using it to uncover truths long forgotten.
Art of the Small
Vergere, a former Jedi, created one of the strangest powers ever seen—the Art of the Small. It allowed her to shrink her Force presence down to a microscopic level and alter the properties of matter itself. She once changed the water molecules in her body so that her tears carried healing power. Others learned to merge with different materials to gain special traits, like resistance to the Force itself.
Deadly Sight and Force Destruction
Some dark side abilities were terrifying to witness. Deadly Sight let a user kill by looking at their target. The stronger the Force user, the wider the destruction spread—entire groups could turn to ash under their gaze. But it came at a terrible cost, draining their energy almost completely. Similarly, Force Destruction unleashed bursts of dark energy capable of vaporizing everything nearby. It was so exhausting that even the strongest Sith could only use it a few times before collapsing.
Force Weapon
The ability called Force Weapon allowed a user to channel Force energy into an object, turning an ordinary tool into something extraordinary. One Jedi Master once infused his walking stick with the Force, making it strong enough to block a lightsaber strike. It wasn’t a flashy power, but it showed how flexible the Force could be in the right hands.
Doppelgänger
Doppelgänger created perfect illusions—copies of the user or nearby objects that could fool even trained Force users. It was so difficult to master that only a handful could pull it off. One Jedi used it in space battles, projecting entire squadrons of fake starfighters to scare enemy fleets into retreating. Sometimes the illusion of strength worked better than strength itself.
Force Blinding and Plant Surge
Force Blinding was a light-side technique that produced a burst of radiant energy to temporarily—or permanently—blind enemies. Meanwhile, Plant Surge let users connect with nearby vegetation, turning vines and roots into extensions of themselves. Some even controlled aggressive plants to fight their enemies, making nature itself their ally.
Shatterpoint
Few abilities could match Shatterpoint in usefulness. This rare technique let the user sense the weak spots in both objects and living beings. With a single strike at the right point, a wall could crumble or an opponent could be defeated. Mace Windu was one of the best-known Jedi to use this power, spotting tiny flaws in his enemies’ defenses that others couldn’t see.
Force Storm and Force Drain
Then there were powers only the most fearsome Force users could wield. Force Storm created enormous lightning storms that could tear apart cities—or even fleets. The strongest users could shape the storm’s energy into wormholes, teleporting beings across the galaxy. Force Drain, on the other hand, fed on life itself. Sith Lords used it to steal the energy of others, growing stronger with every soul they consumed. Some grew so addicted that their bodies decayed, leaving them as hollow spirits desperate for more life to absorb.
Sorcery and Supernova
The Force wasn’t limited to instinct—it could also take form through rituals. Sith Sorcery and Nightsister Magic used chants, relics, and sacrifices to cast powerful spells. Some could raise the dead, control dreams, or invade another’s mind across light-years. At the far end of power, there was Supernova, a ritual so dangerous it could move or collapse the cores of stars. A single mistake could destroy everyone involved. Only those with immense focus—or total madness—would even attempt it.
A Galaxy of Limitless Possibilities
The Force, in all its forms, is more than just good versus evil, push versus pull, light versus dark. Legends show that it could twist reality, rewrite matter, and touch the stars themselves. Every ability, from lighting a candle with Pyrokinesis to reshaping time with Flow-Walking, tells us one thing—the Force was never meant to have limits. It was only ever shaped by the imagination and courage of those who dared to explore it.
