I’ve always seen Darth Maul as one of the most intense characters in Star Wars. He’s pure anger, focused on revenge, and honestly pretty terrifying. But there’s this one story – tucked into the Age of Republic – Darth Maul comic – where things take a weird turn. Maul ends up living through a vision where he becomes… a Jedi. And not just briefly. He actually feels what it’s like.
Here’s how it all played out.

Maul Was Already Pushing the Limits
This all happened before The Phantom Menace. Maul was already trained, already deadly, and more than ready to take on the Jedi.
The problem? Sidious wouldn’t let him off the leash. So Maul started doing his own thing in the shadows of Coruscant. He built up contacts in the underworld and tracked down Force-sensitives on the side.
There was this guy named Zek Peiro. Just a thief, really, but Maul sensed something in him. They went on a mission together, and it didn’t take long before Maul noticed the guy had some connection to the Force. Rough, untrained, but it was there. For a second, I thought Maul might consider doing something different with this one. But no – he killed Zek the moment he got too confident. No hesitation.
That moment just showed how far gone Maul already was. He didn’t see potential – he only saw threats.
Maul Sees Himself as a Jedi
After that, Sidious stepped in and brought Maul to Malachor. If you know your Sith history, you know what that place means. It’s where the Jedi wiped out the Sith in the past. Total devastation. Ash everywhere.
Sidious used that moment to teach Maul something deeper. He told him to breathe in the ashes of the fallen Sith – literally. That’s when the vision started.
In the vision, everything changed. Maul wasn’t a Sith anymore. He had a blue double-bladed lightsaber. A young Zabrak kid ran up to him, asking for help. His family was being attacked by a huge beast. And instead of ignoring it or turning violent, Maul jumped in and killed the creature to save them.
After that, he sat down with the family. They were calm, thankful, even warm toward him. The kid said something like, “The Jedi are always right where they need to be.” And in that moment, Maul lost it.
He stood up and killed the father first. Then the rest of them. Even the child.
He didn’t hold back. He said the Jedi were a lie, a story told to people who wanted to believe things could be better. And he wasn’t going to let that lie continue.
Back to Reality – And to the Dark Side
The vision ended just as quickly as it started. Maul was back on Malachor, with Sidious watching. Sidious asked what he saw, and Maul told him: rage makes the Sith strong, but it’s not enough on its own. The Jedi have numbers, they have influence, and they have support. That means the Sith have to be smart. They have to be patient.
Sidious agreed – but reminded Maul that patience doesn’t mean weakness. It means control and strategy. And that was something Maul still had to learn.
