Because of their prowess in battle, clone troopers and commanders stand out for their bravery and personality. Yet, many deserved better endings than they received in Star Wars. Here are ten clones that warranted better finales to their character runs.
1. Tech
In The Bad Batch, fan-beloved Tech died in a drifting, inconclusive way. In this scene from Season 2, Tech deliberately fell from the rail carriage into the clouds below to save his friends. While this was heroic, Tech deserved a more definitive send-off.
Tech was known as the “brains of his squad” with deep skills in weaponry and all things technology-related. His quick, witty comments, even before he fell to his death, showcased a memorable personality among the Batch.
Many fans, like those here, expressed how much they missed Tech and “genuinely felt his absence” in Season 3 of The Bad Batch. The speculation of his possible return only added to the void, which testifies to how he could have either stayed in the crew or deserved a better ending.
2. Fives
CT-5555 or Fives experienced a definitive end but was killed by one of his own. Because of his treatment beforehand and that ending, Fives deserved better.
As an Advanced Recon Commando, Fives merged into the 501st Legion and fought under Ahsoka, Anakin, and Commander Rex. During the Battle of Ringo Vinda, Fives saw Tup kill Jedi General Tiplar, which tipped him off to the inhibitor chips. Fives tried to do the right thing by taking the matter to Palpatine, but that’s where his inglorious end began.
Fives’ attempt to reveal the inhibitor chips to the hidden Sidious placed him in this downward spiral. Shaak Ti was blinded to the truth and turned against Fives. He ran from the walls closing in on him until he was blasted by fellow trooper Commander Fox.
3. Tup
Coinciding with Fives, Tup met a tragic end that this character didn’t deserve. Tup and Fives were close friends and helped capture the traitor Pong Krell. Growing into a remarkable fighter, Tup was the first one to get Order 66 and was forced to kill Tiplar.
Tup then became enmeshed in the scheme to cover up the true purpose of the inhibitor chips. Although Fives and medical droid AZI removed Tup’s chip, it was too late to save him. Tup died a pawn in Palpatine’s game.
4. Fox
Not only was Commander Fox the one who shot Fives, but he was also killed by Vader. As “one of the most highly decorated soldiers,” Fox deserved neither of these outcomes.
Beyond the above inglorious moment with Fives, Fox followed his duty under the newly established Empire only to be done away with by Vader. This occurred after Vader sought to capture Jedi Jocasta Nu at the Jedi Temple. Fox did not even get a chance to explain why his troops had fired on Vader.
5. Sev
Sev appears on lists like this one as one of the most skilled clone troopers. Serving in the Commando’s Delta Squad, Sev was a skilled and deadly sniper and master at hand-to-hand combat. Yet, he apparently died on Kashyyyk, providing a vague conclusion to his character arc.
As this video relays, Sev was technically listed as MIA (Missing in Action) because he was left on the planet without confirmation of his death. Such inconclusive endings are really no ending at all.
6. Hardcase
This short video opens with a recap of why Hardcase is on the list of clones who deserved better. As Captain Rex comments, this hero trooper “stole a ship, flew it into a droid core, and smiled as he blew it sky high.” He did that of his own accord, displaying his bravery or “guts”.
This trooper served in several engagements of the Clone Wars and defied Pong Krell’s divisive order. Hardcase gave his life to take out the Separatist DH-Omni Support Vessel, disappearing before his character could fully develop.
7. Denal
The above video also sheds light on Denal as a clone trooper who deserved better because Cad Bane killed him. Bane then took Denal’s armor to undermine their “team.” Serving under Anakin and Captain Rex, Denal fought alongside Hardcase. As with the above, Denal should have met a more heroic end.
8. Gree
Earning a spot as one of the greatest clone commanders, Gree is probably best remembered as the commander whom “Master Yoda beheaded on Kashyyyk.” For that reason, Gree also appears on this list.
As a skilled leader of the 41st Elite Corps, Commander Gree fought under Yoda and Luminara Unduli. His record includes helping the Wookiees fight against the Separatist Droid Army. That he perished through decapitation after being such a skilled warrior is a shame.
9. Colt
Colt deserved better, not because of an inconclusive or unheroic death, but for its graphic nature. As this ranking captures, Colt was “impaled” by Asajj Ventress in such a way that it was censored by Cartoon Network. Grizzly deaths are also unbecoming of great characters.
10. Echo
Echo appears on many lists for both his merits and his undeserved treatment. We close out with him not for how he died, since he lived on in The Bad Batch, but for what happened to him in between his presumed death and rescue.
Believed to have died in an explosion, Echo was captured by the Separatists and transformed into a cyborg, “defective clone,” and “an unwitting pawn.” Echo fared better than the above clones because he was rescued by Rex and the Bad Batch, but still deserved a fairer lot in life.
