As we have probably recognized, the Jedi Order consisted of a diverse range of members. We may think first of humans like Obi-Wan, but we just as quickly think of Yoda from an unknown species. We also have Jedis from such groups as Twi’leks and Kel Dors. Yet, we have even rarer Jedi species than these within the Order. Below are five of the rarest in the galaxy.
1. Beldorion the Hutt
This Hutt departed from others in his family by joining the Jedi, reflecting a rare species within the Order. This video anonymously indicates that one Hutt joined the ranks of the Jedi about 400 years before the Clone Wars. That Hutt went by the name of Beldorion.
Beldorion the Hutt was initially a Jedi Knight before traveling to the planet Nam Chorios, where he succumbed to the dark side. Before his downfall, Beldorion had trained at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, graduated from the academy, and become a Padawan. He undertook travel and studies to pass his Trials to emerge as a Knight.
Yet, in 400 BBY, as he fell to the dark side, Beldorion took it upon himself to become ruler of Nam Chorios. He turned into a corrupt ruler and was not overthrown until 13 ABY when, ironically or fittingly, Leia killed him in lightsaber combat.
Beldorion is certainly a rare Jedi, especially for a species known for its insidious ways. Ultimately, he returned to his family traditions of evil and corruption.
2. Sharad Hett, Tusken Jedi
Another rare Jedi species is the Tusken Raiders, from whom Sharad Hett hailed. Hett became known as a “powerful” and “heroic” Jedi Knight around the time before the Invasion of Naboo in The Phantom Menace. He became so well known among his peers that he garnered several titles, including Champion of Krmar and Tamer of Tyrants.
This video centers Sharad Hett at its number one position and quickly conveys how he became exiled to Tatooine and emerged as warlord of a tribe of Sandpeople. Yet, Hett was killed by the assassin Aurra Sing, who had been sent by the Hutts. Sing herself was a former aspiring Jedi.
To honor Sharad Hett, Ki-Adi-Mundi took his son, A’Sharad Hett, to Coruscant to train as his Padawan. Unfortunately, senior Hett’s son eventually fell to the dark side, concluding this species’s involvement with the Jedi.
3. Akial, the Jawa Jedi
The above video also includes a segment on Jawas being a rare Jedi species. This part is a reference to Akial, a male Jawa who became a Jedi Knight during the Clone Wars. Akial took a great interest in studying the Force and actively sought out new Jedi members.
As a Jedi Consular, Akial distinguished himself not just by his species, but also with his focus on “spreading peace and harmony” through diplomacy. Most notably, he was selected by the Jedi to represent them at a celebration on the moon Dorumaa. He, along with Kel Dor Jedi Krin D’bis (rare too), worked together to recruit new students to the Jedi Academy.
4. The Kushiban Jedi, Ikrit
Rare in species and in bodily form, Ikrit was a male Kushiban Jedi who trained under Yoda. Perhaps most distinguished by his cat-like resemblance, Ikrit progressed under the Order to become a Master.
Similar to Sharad Hett, Ikrit went into exile after failing to liberate the souls of Massassi children on Yavin 4. He also underwent a Jedi Hibernation trance for centuries that allowed him to escape from the Great Purge.
Ikrit stood at a height of only 0.5 meters and had a hair color that changed with his mood. This Respect Thread points out many admirable qualities to this unique Jedi, including how he “unlocked secrets that few Jedi even dream of comprehending.” Knowledge and diminutive, like Yoda.
5. Ooroo, Unique and Ancient
Going back to the ancient Jedi past, Ooroo was rare for coming from the Celegian species. As a non-humanoid, Ooroo’s bodily form resembled a jellyfish and breathed the gas cyanogen, which was deadly to most others. Because of this breathing pattern, this Jedi Master needed a crystalline life support chamber when oxygen was around.
For Ooroo, we are referring to around 5000 BBY, a time when he was a Jedi instructor who trained extensive students. Sadly, Ooroo perished during a fight with Massassi warriors when he sacrificed himself by breaking his chamber and releasing the cyanogen gas to kill the invaders.
His selflessness became a distinguishing characteristic, as was the fact that he participated in the Great Hyperspace War while essentially floating in his support chamber. A few other Jedi, such as Thon, took on distinctive forms because of their species. Yet, Ooroo edges them out on this list.
