After watching the Ahsoka series, I was thrilled by the return of iconic characters like Anakin Skywalker and the cameo of Captain Rex during the Siege of Mandalore. However, another character piqued my interest—Marrok, whose enigmatic presence left me intrigued.
In his duel with Ahsoka, Marrok’s defeat was marked by an unusual occurrence: upon being struck by her lightsaber, his body emitted green smoke instead of reacting as expected. This peculiar detail led me to question: What exactly was Marrok?
Marrok Might Have Died After the Empire Fell and Was Resurrected by Morgan Elsbeth
The first time we see Marrok is in his cameo appearance in Star Wars: Tale of the Empires in the episode Devoted.
This episode showcases the moment Barriss Offee officially joins the ranks of the Inquisitors, standing alongside some of the first members of the Inquisitorius as they present themselves to their master, Darth Vader.
In this brief but significant scene, Marrok is seen standing beside the Eleventh Brother, confirming his role as an Inquisitor during the height of the Empire’s power.
However, by the time we encounter Marrok again in the Ahsoka series, the Inquisitorius has long since dissolved following the fall of the Empire.
Interestingly, the Star Wars databank provides additional insight into Marrok’s current status: “Once the First Brother Inquisitor hunting Jedi for the Empire, the mysterious Marrok now works as a mercenary hired by Morgan Elsbeth to carry out dark deeds.” This establishes Marrok’s shift in allegiance, making it clear he is now working under Morgan Elsbeth’s orders in the Ahsoka timeline.
This information confirms Marrok’s role as an Inquisitor during the Empire’s reign and his current status as a mercenary under Morgan Elsbeth. However, it doesn’t fully address the mysterious green smoke that emerged when Ahsoka defeated Marrok.
But here’s a theory that I think many Star Wars fans would agree with: the green smoke coming out of Marrok is a clear sign that he was already dead. It’s likely that Morgan Elsbeth resurrected him using Nightsister magick, which explains why he’s now working under her command.
Elsbeth’s Magick Could Enhance Marrok
We still don’t have a clear explanation for why or how Marrok ended up working under Morgan Elsbeth. The small tidbit from the Star Wars databank doesn’t provide enough information to draw any solid conclusions about their connection.
However, if we look back at Savage Opress’s story, the answer might start to make sense—especially when it comes to the green smoke seen when Marrok was struck down.
Savage Opress, a Nightbrother from Dathomir and the son of Mother Talzin, was transformed through the dark magicks of the Nightsisters.
This ritual amplified his strength and aggression while physically transforming him into a fearsome, hulking figure. When Savage eventually fell to Darth Sidious, his death was marked by green smoke escaping from his body—eerily similar to what we see with Marrok.
Given this connection, it’s possible that Morgan Elsbeth, as a Nightsister, used similar magicks or rituals on Marrok, potentially enhancing Marrok’s abilities.
