When the New Jedi Order movie comes out in 2026, it may well include the beloved duo Din Djarin and Grogu.
Rey will be the star character who appears to be moving forward with a new way to lead the Jedi against the threat of reborn Sith. It would make sense to bring in Mando and Grogu to help save the galaxy.
Yet, what would older versions of Din Djarin and Grogu look like? Would they still be as capable and dynamic as they were in The Mandalorian series?
An Older Mando
To speculate about an older version of Din Djarin, we need to first clarify his age during The Mandalorian television series. As a starting point, Din Djarin was born sometime before 19 BBY, or Before the Battle of Yavin from A New Hope.
The Mandalorian takes place in 9 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), or 9 years after the first Star Wars movie. From these two points in time, we can extract an estimate of Mando’s age.
If he was born close to 19 BBY, Mando would only be around age 28 in The Mandalorian.
Yet, if he was born about 5 years before 19 BBY, he would be in his early 30s. Then again, he could be older. Based on the few moments when Din Djarin removes his helmet, as in this scene from Season 2, Episode Episode 7, he may be in his early 40s. It’s hard to tell.
Altogether, we can estimate that Din Djarin is probably in his 30s to early 40s. So what does that mean for the new movie?
One Star Wars fan posted that since The Rise of Skywalker movie took place in 35 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), and the new Jedi Order movie takes place about 15 years afterward, Din Djarin would be in his 70s.
That would be correct if we take the lower age estimate. Yet, based on an older age estimate, Mando would be in his mid-80s.
In either case, he would be old or older, and we can imagine that Mando would slow down some, or a lot, in the new Jedi Order movie.
He may even have rheumatism, or arthritis, as another fan posted on Reddit, which would hinder his fighting skills.
In addition, Din Djarin may be brought into the film to die. Given what happened to Han Solo in The Force Awakens, this could be the end for Mando.
However, if Din Djarin is still protecting Grogu, and Grogu is protecting him, his duty and love for his companion may keep him youthful.
Maybe Grogu has found a way by using the Force to provide Mando with more longevity. Grogu’s Force power has rubbed off on Mando.
With the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu movie earlier this year, it seems likely that these two characters will intersect with the next Jedi movie, starring Rey.
Because of the overlap of these two movies, it seems unlikely that Mando or Grogu will die then. Rey may be inspired by the close relationship between the two of them and perhaps they all work together.
This reasoning leads to the premise that Mando will be alive and well, and still have most of his fighting prowess in the new Jedi movie.
Grogu and the New Jedi Movie
What about Grogu being 45 years older? How will he fit into the narrative? For starters, adding 45 years to his age does not have as much of an impact as it does on Din Djarin.
In Season 1, Grogu is 50 years old, and presumably 51 by Season 2. By the last season, Grogu is most likely 53. So, if we add 45 years to his age, Baby Yoda would be almost 90. Yet, because Grogu’s species can live almost 1,000 years, he would still be quite young.
In Return of the Jedi, Yoda indicated that he was 900 years old. As one article indicates, Yoda also said he had been training Jedi for 800 years by that point.
So, Yoda began working with Jedi at age 100, about the same age Grogu will be in the new movie. We may think right away that he could help Rey with training Jedi.
However, one complication in determining Grogu’s role is that we do not know much about his growth cycle or how his species ages.
Although we know that Grogu belongs to the same species as Yoda, we do not know much about how they grow and age. As Wookieepedia states, this species is “shrouded in mystery.”
We do know that Grogu and Yoda are force-sensitive, to say the least, and eat amphibians, in Grogu’s case, and rootleaf stews, in Yoda’s.
This species ages very slowly, remaining in infancy” for 50 years. Grogu will still be young in the new Jedi movie, but he can already use Force powers like telekinesis. He even appears to be on his way to mastering the Force.
So, we could expect him to pull off more amazing feats, as he did when he saved Din Djarin and Bo-Katan with a protective Force bubble at the end of Season 3.
Grogu will be quite vital at around 100 and his Force powers will likely have grown. Even though he left his training with Luke Skywalker, Grogu is gifted with the Force, and it seems likely that he will continue to develop with abilities without official training.
One possibility from this line of reasoning is that Grogu could abandon Din Djarin to be with his fellow Jedi, Rey, to train the next generation of Jedi.
Yet, this outcome appears unlikely given the strong attachment between Mando and Grogu.
More likely, Mando, Grogu, and Rey will team up to face the rising Sith power. Mando has aged some, so he may be more of a strategist, but Grogu and Rey will be at the height of their powers.
Older Versions of Din Djarin and Grogu
Older and wiser, Din Djarin will play a central role in the new Jedi movie. He may be showing his age and battle scars more, but he works in tandem with his trusted partner Grogu, and is thus still vital to the action.
Grogu will still be quite young and his powers are still building. He may figure to be just as central to the Jedi story as Rey.
