As a Star Wars fan just like everyone, rewatching the films is one of the best experiences for me. Every time we revisit them, we come away with a different point of view compared to the very first watch. Take Luke’s duel on Death Star Two, there are many theories about that fight. But when I rewatch the movies, I also like to hunt for background characters and look up who they are, because we know side characters usually have long entries on Wookieepedia. This time is the same.
If you remember the scene when Luke and the gang try to land Shuttle Tydirium on the forest moon of Endor, Vader approaches and asks where the shuttle is going. If you pause for a bit, you will notice a droid working with the crew on the Executor. So who is this droid?
The AV-6R7 Droid on the Executor
We can spot the droid during the Shuttle Tydirium code check on the Executor bridge. Pause on the wide shots and look into the crew pit beside the central walkway. There is a tall black supervisor droid working at the consoles next to the officers. If you do not remember, watch the video below. I have marked the time stamp so you can spot it yourself.
That droid is AV-6R7. In universe he is a supervisor assigned to Vader’s flagship during the Endor operation. You will see him again as the battle ramps up, still at his post until the A wing crash takes out the bridge.
But what does this droid do, or at least what is his function? Wookieepedia puts it this way, “AV-6R7 was a V-series droid supervisor who served the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War, overseeing the work droids constructing the second Death Star superweapon and acting as a liaison to the Executor, flagship of Sith Lord Darth Vader.”
In simple terms, AV 6R7 is not a fighter, he is a supervisor. He manages other droids, tracks tasks, and keeps the second Death Star project moving. Think schedules, status checks, and routing work orders to the right units. As a liaison to the Executor, he also feeds progress reports to the bridge crew, flags problems that need resources, and turns high level orders into jobs the work droids can actually do.
The Dark Fact about AV-6R7
If we look closely at AV 6R7 and compare him with EV 9D9 from Jabba’s palace, it is easy to see why fans mix them up. Same tall head, same narrow jaw, same supervisor frame. The big difference in some references is the arms.
So where are AV 6R7’s arms? Older material says the Empire punished this droid by removing them after a failure. As the Star Wars, The Visual Dictionary puts it, “An Imperial V series AV 6R7 oversees work droids building the second Death Star for Moff Jerjerrod. It was deprived of arms for failing to keep track of faulty power droid.”
On screen in Return of the Jedi he clearly has arms while working a console on the Executor bridge, which tells us the punishment was either temporary or from an earlier point in his service record. Either way, it fits the Imperial mindset. Droids are tools, and when a tool slips, they do not hesitate to take pieces away.
