“Imagine a radioactive waste filled ocean with creatures that survived” for thousands of years. This waste and creatures swimming may be part of what we would find on the lowest levels of Coruscant. It’s hard to say definitively. Yet, we do find specific, intriguing elements on the lowest levels, some more about terrain and creatures, while others relate to an underground criminal world.
The Lowest Levels of Coruscant
Another fan from the above Reddit post suggests we would find “a sort of indigenous species” on the lower levels, “the Cthon/Troglodytes.” These creatures are also part of this strange, layered planet.
While it’s not entirely clear on which level the Cthons reside, most likely between Level 1 and 5, this humanoid species that resembles “decaying corpses with loose flaps of flesh” is one element that makes this underworld so fascinating (and Halloween-like).
The last time we wrote about the levels of Coruscant, we investigated how high and deep they went. The article focused on the “massive city-like layers with buildings, infrastructure, and public spaces.” Part of the assessment disclosed how around Level 1313 and below, a “post-apocalyptic” world emerged.
Collectively, the lowest levels are a composite of ground surface, swirling and toxic ocean, bewildering creatures, and a forgotten past. We break down the levels here to provide a closer look.
Lowest Levels 0 to 5
Level 0 is the ground level of Coruscant, and the one most open to speculation. The comic issue Star Wars Adventures 25 (more from this source below) mentions this level, but does not actually describe it.
Fan posts indicate that this level possibly has a rocky crust surface and may have duraslugs slithering around on the surface. These creatures are known to feed off the stone duracrete that is on the lowest levels.
Moving up one layer, we encounter Level 1, which is officially described as “the lowest megastructure level constructed” and deemed “uninhabitable.” This level goes way back to 100,000 BBY and is said to rest on soil, so we could conclude that both levels 0 and 1 have a planet-surface environment.
Based on Wookieepedia, the next layer with some information is Level 4, where we start to encounter more of what we may think of for the “subterranean underworld” of Coruscant. This level was not supposed to be accessible, but we do have a story that takes us there.
Coming back to Star Wars Adventures 25, Princess Leia is tasked with teaching Amilyn Holdo how to drive a speeder sometime before A New Hope. Their journey takes them down to Level 4 and the Lost Museum, a structure set “amidst rocky terrain” and apparently “carved almost entirely out of the stone surrounding it.”
As this museum is located on or below Level 4, this environment provides some clues as to what levels 3 or 2 could resemble. The Lost Museum contains human and animal statues, including one that looked like a Fathier. It also had “bioluminescent flora” growing inside it to illuminate the interior. On their way to the museum, Leia and Amilyn had to dodge a criminal gang, which also resonates with the underworld we may imagine.
Level 5 is designated as the “lowest habitable level” and “lowest accessible level” of the underworld, but Leia and Amilyn’s story indicates otherwise. As Leia urged, “Level 5 is as low as you can go.” But Amilyn disagreed, and they ventured beyond it.
Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel first mentions this level while it discloses Galen and Lyra Erso’s entanglement with the development of the Death Star. Level 5 may provide us with some of this overall setting – a place in “a perpetual state of darkness illuminated only by artificial lights.” It is an uninviting layer, as are those above it.
Levels 128 and 1312
From there, descriptions of the lower levels move to 128 and 1312. Level 128 is where we find an underworld creature. In Star Wars 36 comic, an adventure story with Lando and the Millennium Falcon includes this level and its “giant monsters and ancient artifacts.” This level is reminiscent of lower ones but apparently more occupied.
Level 1312 may be the best-known lower level of Coruscant. This is the location of the criminal underworld where Asajj Ventress stayed in the alleyway called the corner of twelfth and G. Ahsoka also hid there for a time.
The Clone Wars episode “To Catch A Thief” brought us into Level 1312 after Ahsoka was accused of bombing the Jedi Temple. In this scene, we get a sense of the dark and dangerous surroundings, where an attack can appear out of nowhere.
Coruscant’s Lowest Levels
Collectively, Coruscant’s lowest levels feature strange creatures, mundane surfaces, ancient artifacts, and a crime world. Zeroing in on the lowest of low, we find presumably uninhabited layers with possible duraslugs and a museum. Coming upward, it’s still dark and prohibitive, but more life exists on the margins.
