Palpatine Seeks Out the Mighty Dark Side Force User by Using Maul
So, after the conversation, we don’t know exactly what Palpatine used Maul for. But these canon comics have the answer for us to explore.
The four-issue series “Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir,” released in 2014, gives us the details.
In issue 1, Maul is captured and imprisoned on the planet Stygeon. In front of him are Palpatine and Count Dooku, summoned by Palpatine.
With Dooku just arriving, Palpatine explains his true plan and why he captured Maul: “There are many Forces poised against us. To ensure our complete and total victory, we must root out and destroy all of our enemies.”
Dooku asks, “You speak of enemies other than the Jedi?”
Palpatine replies, “I speak of that Dathomir witch, Mother Talzin.”
Surprising, right? After General Grievous’s invasion of Dathomir, we all thought Mother Talzin was gone for good, since all the Nightsisters were killed by Grievous’s troops.
While hiding, Mother Talzin was planning her revenge against Sidious for what he did to the Nightsisters of Dathomir.
But Palpatine knew Mother Talzin would still be alive after the invasion. He believed he could use Maul to lure her out.
Maul Seeks Guidance from Mother Talzin Through the Force
When Maul was captured, he was the leader of the Shadow Collective. Without wasting time, the members of the Shadow Collective discovered where Maul was imprisoned and successfully rescued him.
However, Maul’s escape was actually part of Sidious’s plan.
After escaping, Maul immediately contacted Mother Talzin through the Force for guidance. She instructed Maul to capture Palpatine’s apprentice, Count Dooku.
Following her guidance and using his talents, Maul succeeded beyond expectations, capturing both Dooku and General Grievous as hostages.
The Fallen of Mother Talzin
While Dooku and Grievous were captured, Maul’s actions drew the attention of the Jedi.
Without hesitation, Obi-Wan, Mace Windu, and Jedi Master Tiplee launched an investigation and discovered Maul’s location.
Not wasting a moment, the Jedi attacked Maul’s ship.
The attack of the Jedi has created chaos, allowing Grievous to escape.
Knowing the Jedi were stronger, Maul asked for Dooku’s help, and Dooku agreed, realizing that if Maul fell, Dooku would be captured by the Jedi as well.
With Dooku’s help, Maul and Dooku managed to eliminate Jedi Master Tiplee.
But Obi-Wan and Mace Windu were still there. Realizing the Jedi were too strong, they decided to flee back to Dathomir.
On Dathomir, Mother Talzin was waiting for Maul to bring in Dooku. Knowing Mother Talzin needed a body, Maul allowed her to possess Dooku.
However, after the ritual was completed, Palpatine and Grievous arrived to save Dooku. Even after possessing Dooku, Mother Talzin was no match for Palpatine.
Using his Force Lightning, Palpatine demanded, “Release my apprentice, haggard witch.”
The Force Lightning was so powerful that Mother Talzin had to leave Dooku’s body and return to her own.
In her physical form, she battled Palpatine, both using Force Lightning, but Palpatine was stronger. After a few seconds, Dooku awakened and, realizing the situation, joined Palpatine in attacking Mother Talzin with his Force Lightning.
Unable to hold on any longer, Mother Talzin decided to let Maul escape, sacrificing herself to buy him time.
Grievous then stepped up and ended Mother Talzin’s life with his lightsabers once and for all.
