Why Did Luke Skywalker Use A Sith Technique For His Green Lightsaber?

Luke Skywalker’s journey to create his green lightsaber is a tale filled with adventure and mystery.

In this article, we’ll explore his journey through both the “Legends” and canonical Star Wars lore, detailing how, in the absence of traditional Jedi resources post-Order 66, Luke turned to a controversial Sith technique to synthesize his green kyber crystal.

Even as he used methods associated with the dark side, his steadfast adherence to Jedi principles steered his choices.

After the Empire wiped out the Jedi Order in an event called Order 66, it took control of the galaxy and tried to eliminate all traces of the Jedi.

During this dark time, many Jedi temples and resources were destroyed or hidden, including the rare kyber crystals used in lightsabers.

Luke Skywalker, having lost his lightsaber from Obi-Wan Kenobi during a fight with Darth Vader, had to figure out how to make a new one without the usual Jedi materials.

Since kyber crystals were so hard to find, Luke looked for other ways to build his lightsaber.

He discovered instructions left by Obi-Wan in his old hut on Tatooine.

These included details on how to make a synthetic kyber crystal using an ancient Sith technique once banned by the Jedi

Following these instructions, Luke was able to create a new lightsaber, showing his ability to adapt and innovate under the Empire’s strict rules.

Luke’s Synthesis of Jedi Wisdom and Sith Techniques

Luke’s exploration into both Jedi and Sith realms of knowledge reflects his complex nature and his willingness to embrace the full spectrum of the Force.

Despite his use of a Sith technique to synthesize his kyber crystal, the crystal manifested as green—a hue deeply associated with Jedi wisdom and mastery over the Force—instead of red, which is common for Sith synthetic kyber crystals.

This unexpected outcome demonstrates Luke’s inherent purity and steadfast dedication to the Jedi path, even when employing unconventional methods.

His successful synthesis of the crystal not only exemplifies his technical savvy but also his profound connection to the Force, allowing him to channel his intentions into the creation process effectively.

This blending of Sith techniques with Jedi ideals marks a pivotal moment in Luke’s journey, showcasing his ability to transcend traditional boundaries in search of a greater understanding of the Force.

Revisiting Canon Origins

How Luke Skywalker Got His Green Lightsaber Crystal

In issue #35 of the Star Wars 2020 canon comics, Luke Skywalker starts a deep journey of understanding with the help of Dr. Cuata, a kyber crystal expert.

Initially, Dr. Cuata gives Luke a red kyber crystal, typically used by Sith because of its connection to the dark side of the Force.

As Luke tries to heal this crystal, he has a vision of a Sith Lord, which makes him face and understand the darker aspects of the Force.

This tough experience tests Luke’s determination and his ability to stay on the Jedi path, showing his growth and commitment to overcoming the influence of the dark side.

After this challenging encounter, Dr. Cuata introduces a clear kyber crystal to Luke.

When Luke connects with this crystal, it starts to change under his influence, turning into a vibrant green.

During this connection, Luke has a vision of Yoda, who offers encouragement and wisdom.

Yoda’s words help reinforce Luke’s commitment to the light side of the Force and remind him of the balance he must maintain.
