In The Empire Strikes Back, there’s a moment that always feels a little strange when we think about it. Darth Sidious tells Darth Vader that Luke Skywalker is the son of Anakin Skywalker. On the surface, it works for the story. Luke being Vader’s son is a major reveal, and the plot needs it to move forward.
But by doing that, Sidious is also exposing a lie that goes back nearly two decades. At the end of Revenge of the Sith, Sidious told Vader that Padmé died because of him. That version of events only works if Padmé never survived long enough to give birth. By confirming who Luke really is, Sidious is quietly admitting that he lied to Vader about one of the most important moments of his life.
So why would Sidious tell Vader that himself? Wouldn’t that just confirm to Vader that he had been lied to all along?
Luke Being Vader’s Son Was a Later Decision
At first glance, we might think this is a plot hole, or that Sidious was simply being careless when he told Vader who Luke really was. But part of the reason this moment feels strange is because the story itself wasn’t always built this way.
In the earliest drafts, Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker were two different characters. Luke Skywalker was the son of Anakin Skywalker, not Darth Vader. Vader was simply the Jedi who betrayed and killed Luke’s father.
That original idea is reflected in how the story was told in The Empire Strikes Back. It follows the same explanation Obi-Wan gives Luke, the version we’ve all heard many times: that Anakin Skywalker was a good Jedi who was betrayed and murdered by a younger Jedi named Darth Vader. The father and son connection didn’t exist at that point in the story’s development.
It was only later, during the writing of The Empire Strikes Back, that the decision was made to merge Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader into the same person. That change reshaped the entire trilogy
Vader Already Knew Sidious Had Lied to Him
As we might think, Sidious revealing that Luke Skywalker is Vader’s son would also expose the moment when Sidious lied about Padmé’s true death. As I mentioned earlier, and as we probably all noticed, this contradiction goes back to Episode III. When Vader asks what happened to his wife, Sidious simply tells him, “It seems in your anger, you killed her.”
That explanation only works if Padmé died on Mustafar. If Padmé survived long enough to give birth, then Sidious’s story was never true to begin with.
However, in canon, before Palpatine reveals that Luke Skywalker is Vader’s son, Vader had already discovered the truth himself. In the Darth Vader (2015) comic series, specifically issue #6, Vader sends Boba Fett to find out who the Rebel pilot was that destroyed the Death Star. Fett returns with one piece of information: the name “Skywalker.”
After hearing that name, Vader immediately realizes the truth. He understands that Sidious lied to him twenty years earlier. From that point on, Vader begins to think about overthrowing the Emperor and ruling the galaxy himself, with his son at his side.
But How Did Sidious Know Luke Was a Skywalker?
It seems we have answered the question quite clearly from both inside and outside the Star Wars universe. However, there is still one important piece missing: how did Sidious know that Luke was a Skywalker?
Looking back at the original scene in The Empire Strikes Back, when the Emperor demands to speak with Vader, Sidious tells him, “There is a great disturbance in the Force… We have a new enemy, Luke Skywalker.”
So how did the Emperor know exactly who Luke Skywalker was? One explanation comes from the book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back, in the short story titled “Disturbance.” Throughout this short story, we learn that after the destruction of the first Death Star, Palpatine himself senses a disturbance in the Force.
With further investigation through the Force, Palpatine is able to uncover Luke’s identity through a Force vision.
