If you’ve ever watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars or Revenge of the Sith, you might have wondered: why didn’t General Grievous use red lightsabers? After all, he worked for the Sith and fought Jedi all the time. You’d expect him to have red blades, right?
Well, it turns out there’s a very specific reason—and it all comes down to a pair of Dark Jedi and one very unfortunate acid lake.

Grievous Used to Have a Red Lightsaber Collection
Grievous did have red lightsabers once. There’s a story told in Dark Jedi — Star Wars Manga: Silver (non-canon) that explains exactly what happened.
The whole thing started when Grievous got a report from one of his MagnaGuards. Apparently, a Dark Jedi who had recently been on board his ship had stolen his collection of Sith lightsabers. And not just one or two — his whole collection. I can only imagine how furious he must’ve been hearing that.
But Grievous didn’t waste time. He already knew where the thief was heading and immediately flew to Dica, a planet known for its dangerous acid lakes.
The Fight on Dica
When he landed, Grievous spotted one of the Dark Jedi standing on a high embankment. He confronted her, demanding her name. That’s when her twin sister stepped out from behind her. Turns out, it wasn’t just one thief — it was a team.
The two sisters weren’t going to give up their prize without a fight. They attacked together and actually managed to damage part of Grievous’ mask and take the upper hand for a moment. But if there’s one thing about Grievous — he doesn’t go down easy. With a powerful strike, he knocked both of their lightsabers and his stolen red sabers into one of the acid lakes below.
That was it. The sabers were gone for good, destroyed in the acid. Disarmed and outmatched, the sisters quickly retreated while Grievous shouted after them.
So Why the Blue and Green Sabers?
After losing the red sabers, Grievous decided to start over. This time, he focused on taking lightsabers from the Jedi he defeated.
And honestly, that worked out well. During the Clone Wars, there were plenty of Jedi to fight, and taking their sabers served as both trophies and a warning. That’s why we always see him using blue and green blades instead.
