Why Han Solo Got Kicked Out Of The Imperial Navy

Why Han Solo Got Kicked Out Of The Imperial Navy

Most fans remember Han Solo’s own quick explanation in Solo: A Star Wars Story: he was kicked out of the Imperial flight academy for “having a mind of my own.” That line is true, but the comic adaptation gives much more detail about what actually happened. Han was not expelled because of one random mistake. By that point, his superiors were already losing patience with him, and his flying skill was basically the only thing keeping him in the academy. So what was the final incident that made the Empire throw Han Solo out for good?

Han’s Flying Skill Was the Only Thing Keeping Him at the Academy

By the time Han Solo was training at the Imperial Academy on Carida, he had already become a problem for his superiors. He was clearly talented in the cockpit, but that talent came with the kind of attitude the Empire hated. Han did not fly the way he was supposed to. He flew with instinct, took risks, and kept pushing against the discipline the academy was trying to force on him.

That was part of what made him dangerous in their eyes. Han was not just reckless on his own. Other recruits had started trying to copy his flying moves, and at least one cadet nearly got killed attempting it. So by that point, Han’s skill was no longer just helping him stand out. It was also creating problems around him inside the academy.

Even so, the Empire did not throw him out right away. His flying ability was still too valuable to ignore, and it was basically the only thing saving him from expulsion. That is what makes this part of the story important. Han was already on thin ice, but his talent kept buying him more time.

There were even people who thought he deserved one last chance. Broog vouched for Han and asked Captain Nettic Whain to let him stay and fall into line. That detail matters because it shows Han’s expulsion was not sudden. Long before the final incident, the Empire had already decided he was difficult, reckless, and hard to control. The only question was how much longer they were willing to put up with him.

The Onyx Squadron Attack Became Han’s Final Mistake

During an attack by raiders on Onyx Squadron, Han once again chose to ignore orders. This time, he did it to save the life of Cadet Lyttan Dree, which shows the problem was never that Han lacked skill or courage. In fact, he managed to take out three raiders in the middle of the fight. But even if his intentions were good, the result still ended in disaster. Han crashed into a hangar, destroying it along with dozens of astromechs.

That was the moment his superiors finally had enough. Han had already built a long record of reckless behavior and insubordination, and the Onyx Squadron attack became the incident that pushed everything over the edge. He was court-martialed, tried by Commodore Almudin, and expelled from the academy. From there, Han was reassigned to the 224th Imperial Armored Division as a corporal and sent to Mimban, where his time in the Imperial military took a very different turn.
