So, if you’ve ever dug into the Sith backstory in Star Wars, you’ve probably seen the name Korriban thrown around it’s the legendary homeworld of the Sith.
But then suddenly, in The Clone Wars series, it pops up with a brand-new name: Moraband. I remember wondering, “Wait, why the switch? Korriban was iconic!” Let’s break it down.

Where Korriban Came From
Korriban has been around since way back in 1994, in Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith 2. It was the classic name in the old Expanded Universe, now known as Legends.
This planet wasn’t just a random location; it was where the Sith originated, and it was everywhere – Knights of the Old Republic, Old Republic novels, and even the MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.
I mean, for me, Korriban became this dark, mysterious place with tombs, Sith lore, and an eerie vibe that just felt so right for the Sith.
So, why suddenly call it Moraband?
George Lucas Wanted a Fresh Take
When George Lucas introduced the Sith homeworld in The Clone Wars Season 6, fans quickly noticed that the name had changed from the classic “Korriban” to “Moraband.”
For years, fans speculated that Lucas made the switch because “Korriban” sounded too much like “Coruscant,” the galaxy’s bustling capital, which might cause confusion for casual viewers.
However, Lucas later clarified that the real reason for the change was deeper, he wanted a name that better reflected the Sith’s dark nature.
“Moraband” was inspired by “moribund,” meaning “at the point of death,” capturing the grim essence of the Sith homeworld.
This new name painted the planet as a place marked by decay and danger, in line with the Sith’s legacy of destruction.
Korriban Isn’t Totally Gone
Thankfully, the story didn’t completely erase Korriban. In 2019, Star Wars Myths & Fables threw us a bone by hinting that Korriban was the ancient name for Moraband.
It was like a little shout-out to the Legends fans, saying, “Yeah, Korriban was real, just from way back in the day.”
Honestly, I’m still partial to Korriban – it just sounds like the perfect name for a Sith planet. Some fans have said it feels more haunting or mysterious than Moraband.
But I get that, for newer fans or casual viewers, Moraband might be easier to keep straight from Coruscant.
So, what about you? Do you lean toward Korriban, or have you warmed up to Moraband?
For me, no matter the name, the Sith homeworld’s still that eerie, tomb-filled planet with some of the coolest lore in the Star Wars universe.
