10. The Opening of Star Wars
From the moment the opening words scroll up the screen and the Star Wars theme kicks up to the first chase of the Imperials after the Rebels sets the tone for the entire saga.
In 1977, the opening crawl contained the famous line, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….” before the music bursts in and the initial setup is provided.
Then the camera pans down into the action, right away, with the Rebel ship chased and fired upon by the vast Imperial Star Destroyer. The combined scene enthralls audiences from the start and continues to do so 47 years later.
9. Yoda Lifts the X-Wing
As the most well-known and “legendary” Jedi Master of the Star Wars saga, Yoda lets us know that small figures can have great strength.
When we first encounter him in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda is a mysterious character with questioned abilities.
He proves himself in the key moment when he lifts Luke’s X-Wing out of the swamp at Degabah by using the Force.
From a vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke has sought out Yoda for training and guidance. Yet, Luke is not sure that Yoda is truly a legendary Jedi Master, at least anymore. After his X-Wing sinks into the swamp, Luke is even more distressed.
As we see here, Yoda first advises him “Do or Do Not. There is no try.”
After Luke attempts to use the Force to lift his X-Wing, he gives up frustrated. Yet, Yoda shows how it is done, lifting the spacecraft into the air and safely on land only with the Force.
This moment gives a ray of hope to a time when the Rebellion and Luke are down.
8. The Trash Compactor Scene
In A New Hope, our heroes are in trouble. Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie find themselves trapped in the trash compactor.
What makes matters worse, and why this scene is so compelling, is that walls start moving inward on a path to crush all four of them.
This moment occurs after the rescue of Princess Leia from a detention cell in the Death Star.
They ended up jumping into a garbage chute to avoid getting captured by stormtroopers.
As Wookieepedia explains, since the chute sensors can detect the type of items going down, their armor and weapons (disguised as stormtroopers) direct them to the recyclable waste.
They get stuck down there, and a creature known as a dianoga pulls Luke underwater almost to his doom.
The moment gets even more intense, though, once the compactor walls start closing in. Fortunately, R2-D2 and C-3PO save the day, adding a little comic relief to an intense scene.
7. The Final Moment in the Duel on Mustafar
In Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, audiences see an extended fight scene between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
This scene takes place on the volcanic planet of Mustafar and provides plenty of orchestrated lightsaber-fighting drama.
The Duel on Mustafar is quite powerful, featuring the apprentice Anakin now turned Sith facing his former master and close friend Obi-Wan.
Yet, the closing moment of the fight conveys the most emotion and appeal for audiences.
After jumping and dueling along a river of lava, Obi-Wan leaped to higher and more stable ground.
Obi-Wan tries to warn Anakin not to try to attack him but the latter does anyway and gets Obi-Wan’s lightsaber.
As Anakin slides to rest on the lava bank with only one arm remaining, Obi-Wan declares, “You were the Chosen One!” And how Anakin was supposed to destroy the Sith, “not join them.”
After Anakin yells back, “I hate you,” Obi-Wan says, “You were my brother Anakin. I loved you.” This moment tears at viewers and Obi-Wan alike.
6. The Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader Duel
In A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi enthralls audiences several times, such as when he first meets Luke and he reveals how he is the Jedi master that Luke is looking for.
However, the duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader/Anakin near the end of the movie is the most powerful.
The Master and Apprentice face again, but as Darth says, “When I left you, I was but a learner. Now I am the Master.”
The lightsaber battle itself is far less dramatic than their previous one, albeit from a movie filmed later.
What makes the fight dramatic is what it represents for the movie series.
As Darth continues to say, “Your powers are weak old man.” Yet, Obi-Wan lets Vader know what is really going on here by stating, “You cannot win, Darth. If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Obi-Wan is letting us know that his defeat is a victory for the light side of the Force.
When Vader does prevail, Obi-Wan vanishes and Luke emerges into a leadership role. The Rebellion is guided by Obi-Wan’s sacrifice, establishing the rest of the original trilogy, the prequels, and the sequels.
5. When Anakin Turns Against Mace Windu
As one of the central characters in the whole saga, Anakin Skywalker has multiple key moments.
When he turns against Mace Windu and sides with Palpatine is one of the most memorable and important to the narrative.
Chancellor Palpatine had been secretly influencing Anakin’s turn to the dark side when the Jedi discovered that Palpatine was actually Darth Sidious.
Mace Windu and three other Jedi go to arrest Palpatine, leading to the duel in his office.
While Palpatine slays three of the four, Windu fights and disarms Darth Sidious. This is a crucial moment that could have stifled the Empire before it took hold.
However, Anakin intervenes and stops Windu from killing Palpatine. Anakin is allured by Palpatine’s promise to save Padme Amidala.
Sidious takes advantage of the pause in the fighting to cast force lightning at Windu, who deflects it. What happens next sets Star Wars on its path.
We can see Palpatine wither into the Emperor before Anakin cuts Windu’s hands off.
Then, the Emperor uses Force Lightning again to send Windu to his death, a shocking moment that leads to the rise of Darth Vader.
4. When Han Solo Dies
The death of Han Solo is another shocking moment that fills out the contours of the Star Wars narrative. This scene comes in the sequel movie The Force Awakens.
This movie brought audiences into the world following the fall of the Empire and included the return of Han Solo.
We learn that Han had a son with Leia named Ben who turned to the Dark Side after a failed training with Luke Skywalker.
As Han gets drawn into the Resistance against the First Order, he tries to save Ben/Kylo Ren on the Starkiller Base.
In another emotional scene, Han is reunited with his son, and it appears that Ben will return to the good side.
Kylo Ren/Ben says, “I know what I have to do but don’t know if I have the strength to do it,” with the audience thinking that he is struggling with returning home with his father. Ben then starts to hand over his lightsaber to Han.
Yet, just at this crucial moment, Kylo Ren activates and stabs his lightsaber into Han, who puts his hand on Ben’s face once more before he plunges to his death. A fan-favorite character from the original films thus perishes.
3. When Luke Turns Down the Emperor
As fans know, it is not all doom and gloom in Star Wars. We have crucial moments when good triumphs over evil, such as when Luke Skywalker turns down the Emperor and does not kill his father, Darth Vader.
In Return of the Jedi, Luke returns to confront Vader and Darth Sidious in the Emperor’s Throne Room on the Death Star II.
Luke engages in a second lightsaber duel with Vader but is more powerful now and knocks Vader to the floor, cuts off his right hand, and is poised to end Vader.
The Emperor wants Luke to kill him, “fulfill” his destiny, and take his father’s place.
However, Luke lowers his lightsaber, and says, “Never,” casts his lightsaber aside, “I’ll never join the Dark side. You’ve failed your Highness. I am a Jedi like my father before me.” Luke has stood up to the powers of the Emperor and stayed with the Jedi.
2. When Vader Throws the Emperor Down the Reactor Shaft
After Luke refuses the Emperor, the latter starts electrocuting him with Force lightning.
Luke writhes in pain on the floor and appeals to his father to help him. Darth Vader looks on at the Emperor while Luke is near his demise.
Yet, hope reigns supreme in Star Wars. As shown in the same video clip from #3, Vader picks the Emperor up and hurls him into the reactor shaft to his doom (or so it seemed until The Rise of Skywalker).
Vader/Anakin has saved Luke and himself from the Dark side.
This moment is about Anakin’s redemption and allowing Luke to guide the galaxy on the right path.
Vader has Luke take off his mask soon afterward because he knows that he has sacrificed himself for the greater good, and that is what Star Wars is all about.
1. Luke, I Am Your Father
When Darth Vader reveals to Luke Skywalker that he is his father is the most powerful moment in The Empire Strikes Back and the Star Wars saga.
This pivotal scene was so important that it was kept secret from almost everyone. That secrecy provided extra power to the moment and shifted the whole galaxy.
As Star Wars fans have known, and articles like this one recap, George Lucas kept this plot twist under guard, and the famous line about Vader being Luke’s father was dubbed in later.
Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke, was only told right before the scene was shot.
This moment changed the course of the saga, including for the next film Return of the Jedi when Luke confronts his father once more but declines to take his place beside the Emperor.
This scene also influenced the prequels, giving impetus to Anakin’s story and chronicling his turn to the dark side.
With this moment, the whole franchise would be different and not nearly as appealing.
As other articles have stated, this is the moment that “supersedes them all” in terms of “shock value” that stands the test of time.
The moment that revealed Vader was Luke’s father made the sage more complex, enduring, fascinating, and worthy of extension into more films and shows.
