Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni, has shared his thoughts on what it would be like if George Lucas returned to the Star Wars universe.
During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Filoni emphasized that Lucas, the mastermind behind the beloved Star Wars saga, would bring fresh and unexpected ideas to the franchise.
“We rent the building I work in from George, so he has all the keys anyway. He can come right in, he has the pass. I’ll tell you, whatever he would come up with would be different. He was always the most surprising in what he would do and how he would push things,” Filoni said.
Filoni, who has co-developed acclaimed Star Wars projects like “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels” alongside Lucas, praised the creator’s humble nature and his continuous generosity. “It never ceases to amaze me how George just gives, always, in his whole life. Whether it’s the jobs we all get to have when he’s gone, telling stories in a galaxy he created, or whether it’s building a museum so so many kids can experience art, narrative art — and be inspired by that art and maybe someday tell stories themselves.”
Despite Lucas stepping back from day-to-day operations after selling Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 for over $4 billion, his legacy remains a cornerstone of the Star Wars franchise. Filoni highlighted the supportive relationship he shares with Lucas, likening it to that of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“He’s the most humble guy. It was the greatest asset on Clone Wars, it was the greatest confidence, to know that he was there. To know that, no matter what we did, he was the backstop. And it had to be a little like maybe how Anakin felt with Obi-Wan sometimes, like, ‘Obi-wan’s got my back, I know he’s there.’”
While Filoni continues to expand the Star Wars universe with live-action series like “Ahsoka,” Leslye Headland is at the helm of the latest live-action series, “The Acolyte.” Despite facing some backlash from fans, “The Acolyte” boasts an impressive 84% Tomatometer rating, even as its audience score lags at 15%.
In Filoni’s eyes, Lucas’ return would undoubtedly bring a new and exciting vision to the galaxy far, far away, pushing the boundaries of storytelling in ways only he can.
