Did The Acolyte Just Break Star Wars Canon With a Major Continuity Problem?

Fans are buzzing about a mysterious character in the “Star Wars: The Acolyte” trailer.

He looks like a Sith Lord with his red lightsaber, dark powers, and black outfit.

Everyone’s calling him “the Master,” but no one knows what he’s up to in the show.

There’s a worry that this ‘Master’ might mess up the Star Wars story that George Lucas created.

Does The New Sith Lord in “Star Wars: The Acolyte” Break George Lucas’ Original Canon?

The official trailer for “The Acolyte”’ the biggest Star Wars project of 2024 with a budget of $180 million, teases us with a glimpse of a mysterious figure wielding a red lightsaber.

This has led many to speculate that the character could be a Sith Lord.

However, if this character turns out to be a Sith Lord, it would make the events of “The Phantom Menace” quite puzzling.

It’s important to note that “The Acolyte” series is set nearly 100 years before “The Phantom Menace.”

In “The Phantom Menace,” it wasn’t until after Qui-Gon Jinn’s death that Yoda and Mace Windu realized the Sith had returned.

In the movie, Jedi Master Ki-Adi Mundi’s reaction highlights this confusion. He’s so convinced that the Sith no longer exist that he doubts Qui-Gon Jinn’s report, stating, “the Sith have been extinct for a millennium.”

Now, if the enigmatic Master in “The Acolyte” turns out to be a Sith Lord, as hinted, then the Jedi Order would have known about the Sith’s survival. This would mean that the discovery of a Sith shouldn’t come as a surprise to them.

The Acolyte’s Master Raises New Questions About the Sith’s Rule of Two

We pick up Mae’s story in the second episode of ‘The Acolyte,’ where she continues her mission of revenge, this time setting her sights on Jedi Master Torbin.

While attempting to take down Jedi Master Torbin, Mae mentions her Master for the first time. So far, we don’t have any information about the Master yet, but from the trailer, we can guess that Mae’s reference to the Master is the mysterious Sith wielding a red lightsaber.

Does it ring any bell to you? Yes, the Rule of Two, from Darth Bane, the one who created it for the Sith to follow.

Mae believes that by not using any weapon and killing a Jedi Master, she would please her Master. She stated, “I will kill one of them without a weapon and please the Master.”

However, if “The Acolyte” explains that the relationship between Mae and her mysterious Master follows the Rule of Two of the Sith, then this would conflict with “The Phantom Menace” again.

Because that is the first time Yoda explained the Rule of Two during the funeral of Qui-Gon Jinn to Mace Windu.

Deciphering “The Acolyte” Through Fan Theories

Even though the character in “The Acolyte” trailer looks like a Sith Lord, some fans are not convinced.

They argue that in the Star Wars universe, there are other Force users besides Jedi and Sith, like the Nightsisters, Mortis gods, or Dark Jedi.

For instance, Asajj Ventress’s story shows the varied paths a Force user can take. She started as a Jedi student, turned into a Sith assassin, and eventually followed her own unique direction, separate from the Sith or Jedi.

This shows how complex and personal a connection to the Force can be.

In the same way, the mysterious character in “The Acolyte” might be a Dark Jedi. This term refers to a Jedi who has turned to the dark side but doesn’t follow Sith rules.

This is important because it means there’s a wider range of Force users than just Sith or Jedi. It suggests that someone could use the dark side for their own reasons or beliefs, not necessarily to continue the Sith tradition.
