Have you ever wondered if any Jedi could’ve actually taken down Darth Sidious?
Turns out Yoda, the wise old Jedi we all know and love, had a couple of Jedi Masters in mind who he thought just might have had a shot.
Let’s dive into who Yoda believed could challenge the galaxy’s ultimate big bad, and why he had faith in them.
Who Yoda Thought Could Defeat Sidious
As the Clone Wars were wrapping up, the Jedi sensed a disturbance—a dark one. They soon realized that Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord, had been right under their noses the entire time, posing as Chancellor Palpatine. With this new info, Yoda had to think fast about which Jedi could go toe-to-toe with such a powerful enemy.
1. Mace Windu
First up, Yoda’s second-in-command: Mace Windu. Not only was he one of the best duelists in Jedi history, but his mastery of Vaapad made him uniquely dangerous to the Sith. Vaapad allowed Windu to channel and control the darkness without falling to it, making him one of the few Jedi capable of facing the Sith on their own terms.
Mace’s track record in battle was legendary, and his ability to counter Sidious’s aggressive tactics with Vaapad, combined with his strength in the Force, made him a top candidate. He had previously led numerous successful missions against powerful enemies, and his skill set was tailored to taking on a Sith Lord as dangerous as Sidious.
2. Agen Kolar
Agen Kolar was another Jedi Yoda had confidence in. Known for his precision and focus, Kolar was a highly skilled duelist who had repeatedly demonstrated his ability to handle dangerous situations with calm and efficiency. He was also a trusted member of the Jedi Order, frequently chosen for high-stakes missions due to his sharp combat instincts.
Kolar’s expertise with the lightsaber and his quick reflexes had earned him a reputation as one of the strongest Jedi duelists. While less known than Windu, Kolar’s methodical approach made him a formidable opponent, especially in a group confrontation where teamwork and precision were critical.
The Showdown
So, Mace and Kolar (plus a couple of other Jedi) marched into Palpatine’s office, ready to throw down.
Unfortunately, Kolar didn’t last long. Despite his skill, Sidious took him down fast. It was brutal—a harsh reminder of just how dangerous Sidious was.
Windu, though, held his own. Using Vaapad, he managed to push Sidious back, giving us all a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, Yoda’s faith in him wasn’t misplaced. Windu came so close to winning, proving that Sidious wasn’t invincible after all.
Though things didn’t go as Yoda had hoped, the duel proved that Sidious could be challenged—and Windu came closer than anyone else ever did.
Kolar’s quick demise showed how lethal Sidious was, but Windu’s near-victory hinted that, under the right circumstances, even the galaxy’s greatest villain could be taken down.
Yoda clearly believed in Windu and Kolar’s abilities, and Windu almost proved him right. Do you think Yoda made the right call?
Was there someone else who should’ve faced Sidious instead?

Palpatine 100% threw the fight with Windu. He toyed with him until he sensed Anakin arrive. Yoda was the only one who could match with Sidious, and even he wasn't powerful enough to beat him.

Great article, although one could argue that sidious was playing possum to bait anikin to the Dark side. He also had to convince the council that the jedi could not be trusted and maybe scarred himself on purpose.
