On Coruscant, a lot of fans notice the giant dome in the background and assume it must be some separate mystery building behind the Senate. But the real confusion may be much simpler than that. The shot is probably mixing up the Senate Building with the nearby Senate Office / Executive Building, which makes the whole government district look more confusing than it really is. So which building are we actually looking at?
The Huge Structure Behind It Is the Senate Chamber/Building
The massive structure behind the smaller dome is the part of Coruscant tied to the Galactic Senate itself. The Senate complex is described as a spectacular disc-shaped construct with an immense round rotunda, and that rotunda housed the cavernous Senate chamber where hundreds of senators filled the floating platforms lining the curved walls. It was one of the political centers of the Republic, the place where major events like the Naboo hearings, the vote of no confidence in Valorum, and later the erosion of Senate power all played out. In other words, the giant structure in the background was not just another piece of skyline decoration. It was the heart of galactic government.
Reference material adds even more scale to that. The modern Galactic Senate Building replaced an earlier, smaller debating chamber from the Republic’s earliest days, and its domed exterior measured roughly two kilometers (1.25 miles) in diameter. Inside, the debating rotunda was designed to accommodate platforms for more than 1,000 senators representing the Republic’s member worlds. The building’s internal layout was also meant to speed up decision-making, though that same design included private turbolifts and hidden inner sanctums that made it easier for secret deals and political maneuvering to happen out of public view.
The Smaller Dome in Front Was the Senate Office Building
The smaller dome in front was the Senate Office Building, the government structure that stood beside the main Galactic Senate Building in Coruscant’s Federal District. It later became known as the Imperial Executive Building, which shows how important it was within the larger political complex. So this was not just another dome sitting next to the Senate chamber. It was part of the same center of power, tied to the offices and administration of galactic government.
This is also the side of the complex where Palpatine’s office was located. That means the confrontation in Revenge of the Sith, when Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar, and Saesee Tiin go to arrest Palpatine and the duel breaks out, happened here, in the office side of the Senate complex, not in the giant Senate chamber behind it. The statues of the Four Sages of Dwartii seen in Palpatine’s office are tied to that same location.
