Can a Sith Become a Jedi?

Can a Sith Become a Jedi?

The Sith were power-hungry Force-sensitive beings who used the dark side of the Force to achieve their goals. Rage, anger, hate, and passion were notable Sith traits, hence their red lightsabers. But given their corrupt ways could Sith become a Jedi?

There are many examples of Sith turning to the light side and becoming a Jedi. Both Star Wars Canon and Legends showed us characters who found the light side. Some, you know well, while others made cameo appearances.

Can a Sith Become a Jedi?

Yes, just as a Jedi can become a Sith, a Sith can also become a Jedi. Some Sith were born into the Sith Order and grew up only knowing the ways of the Dark Side. Others, like Anakin Skywalker, renounced the Jedi ways and turned Sith before reverting back.

There were several ways Sith became Jedi. Some discovered the light side on their own. Others never intended to embrace the light side until a Jedi convinced them. A few saw the corruption for themselves, and some even served on the Sith Council before renouncing their ways.

7 Sith Who Turned to the Light Side and Became Jedi

Flint

He became Darth Vader’s fourth pupil, and competed with Lumiya, another apprentice of Vader’s, to become the Sith Lord’s Shadow Hand. However, Vader died and Flint instead became Lumiya’s, now known as the Dark Lady of the Sith, apprentice.

As an apprentice, Lumiya ordered Flint to confront Luke Skywalker, who he crossed paths with on the planet Nalder.

The two dueled and Flint gained the upper hand, but could not  kill Luke. During the battle, Flint encountered Barney, an old friend he thought to be dead, who helped convert him to the light side.

After serving a stint in prison, Flint engaged in humanitarian work, helping displaced victims in the Galactic Civil War. However, his work was short-lived, as Lumiya returned and killed her former apprentice.

Darth Vader

Star Wars: Darth Vader by Greg Pak Vol. 1

Perhaps the most popular Sith Lord to turn Jedi, Darth Vader spent over a decade learning the light side of the Force as Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin, dubbed the “Chosen One,” was unlike most Jedi Younglings. He started his training at age nine, immediately training under Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. Anakin became well-versed as a Jedi, but his emotions often got the best of him, a side effect of starting his training so late.

He never fully embraced the Jedi Code, scoffed at Kenobi, and eventually allowed Shreev Palpatine (Darth Sidious) to exploit his mental weaknesses. It resulted in Anakin turning to the dark side and becoming Darth Vader.

Vader embraced his Sith ways for two decades before confronting his son, Luke Skywalker.

While Luke was told there was no hope left for Vader, he believed otherwise and, upon confronting him at the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi, turned him back to the light.

While the redeemed Skywalker died moments later, he fulfilled his destiny as the Chosen One, bringing balance to the Force.

Galen Marek

Nicknamed Starkiller, Marek served as Darth Vader’s secret apprentice. Trained to be an assassin during the days of the Galactic Empire, including the few Jedi who remained, Marek also believed it was his destiny to help Vader overthrow Darth Sidious.

Unfortunately for Marek, Vader betrayed him following a confrontation with the Dark Lord of the Sith. Even more unfortunate, Galen remained loyal to Vader until the latter set him up on a mission to arrest three Senators, only to leave him for dead.

It was the last straw for Marek, who infiltrated the Death Star to rescue the Senators. While he did not survive the infiltration, his actions kickstarted the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

Darth Sajar

Sajar was a member of the Dark Council during the Great Galactic War. He lured Jedi Master Tol Braga to Dantooine in an assassination plot, claiming he desired peace talks with the Jedi.

He and Braga dueled for three days before the Jedi Master convinced Sajar to turn to the light side, which he agreed to. Sajar became Braga’s Padawan, but would later relapse to the dark side following a Sith invasion, killing several prisoners.

However, he quickly reverted to his Jedi ways, claiming he’d rather die than return to the Sith. Reinforcements arrived courtesy of Braga, and Sajar redeemed himself back to the light side.

Darth Gravid

A Dark Lord of the Sith, Gravid gravitated toward the light side of the Force when he tried to combine the philosophies of both Jedi and Sith. Rendered insane, his calling to the Jedi won out, and he attempted to destroy Sith artifacts to reform them with Jedi teaching.

However, Gravid’s apprentice, Darth Gean, interrupted. The two dueled, with Gravid attempting to dismember Gean resulting in a severed left arm and massive injuries to her face and chest.

Using the rage she learned from the Dark Side, she overpowered and killed Gravid, allowing the Sith to preserve itself.

Lord Scourge

Scourge served as the Sith Emperor’s personal enforcer after a stellar career at the Sith Academy. The pureblood Sith saw through the dark side’s corruption after being called upon to investigate assassination attempts against Darth Nyriss.

The investigation was nothing more than a test of Scourge’s loyalties, and Nyriss revealed a plot that the Emperor sought to kill millions so they could achieve immortality.

After initially aligning himself with Jedi Masters to stop the Emperor, Scourge had an epiphany and saw someone else was destined to complete the task. He turned on the Jedi and served the Emperor for 300 years.

At the onset of the Galactic War, Scourge encountered the Hero of Tython, part of a team to capture the Emperor.

Tython was the Jedi that Scourge saw in his vision three centuries ago, and he made his move, allying with the Hero, and helping them overpower the Emperor.

Kylo Ren

Like his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker, Ren started his training as a member of the Jedi Order. Also, like Anakin, Ren destroyed the new Jedi Temple and its students.

His goal became to continue the legacy of Darth Vader, so much, he further destroyed everything connected with his past, such as slaying his father, Han Solo.

He shared a Force-bond with Rey, the protagonist in the Sequel Series. And although they briefly grew close, their insurmountable difference forced them apart, with Rey joining forces with Leia Organa and Ren becoming the Supreme Leader of specific regions in the galaxy.

He and Rey later confronted one another and engaged in a lightsaber duel, where Ren, hearing Leia’s voice during her final moments of life, returned to the light side and once again became Ben Solo.

Solo accompanied Rey on her final mission to defeat Darth Sidious. And although Rey died in the effort, Ben sacrificed himself to give Rey a second chance at life. And in doing so, he became one with the Force.
