Darth Vader’s death in Return of the Jedi became one of the most important moments in Star Wars. He saves Luke, turns against the Emperor, and dies as Anakin Skywalker again.
But in George Lucas’ early versions of Star Wars, Vader was not always meant to survive that long.
Before he became Luke’s father and the tragic center of the saga, Vader was closer to a regular Imperial villain. And in one early version of the story, he almost died much earlier during the attack on the Empire’s fortress.
Early Vader Was Not Luke’s Father Yet
In George Lucas’ earliest versions of Star Wars, Darth Vader was not yet the full character fans know today. He existed, but he was closer to General Darth Vader, an Imperial military figure with authority, power, and a villain role inside the Empire.
The darker, more familiar version of Vader was still being built from different ideas. Early drafts had other characters who carried pieces of what would later become Darth Vader. Prince Valorum had more of the black-knight Sith presence, while Kane Starkiller carried the idea of a damaged, partly mechanical man. Over time, those ideas were folded together into the Vader we know.
At that stage, “Darth Vader” was still a name and a role Lucas was shaping. He was not yet Luke’s father, not yet Anakin Skywalker, and not yet the tragic figure whose redemption would become the ending of Return of the Jedi.
Vader Was Almost Killed During The Attack
Near the end of that version, Vader is still inside the Empire’s space fortress as the heroes launch their final attack. The battle has turned against the Empire, and even Vader can see that the situation is falling apart. He says they have already lost control of the planet and argues that they need to abandon the station.
But Governor Hoedaack refuses to accept it. He still believes the fortress cannot be destroyed, even as the attack is tearing through it. Vader is ready to leave, but Hoedaack’s arrogance keeps them there.
Then the script describes a giant explosion sweeping through the office. The heroes escape in lifepods, the fortress is destroyed, and Vader is left inside the destruction with the rest of the Imperial leadership.
There is no father reveal waiting for him here, no redemption scene, and no final moment with Luke. At this stage, Vader had not become Anakin Skywalker or the tragic center of the saga yet. His role could end with the fall of the Empire’s weapon.
