Revenge of the Sith begins after the kidnapping has already happened. Coruscant is under attack, the Republic fleet is fighting above the capital, and Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are racing toward the Invisible Hand to rescue Chancellor Palpatine.
But the movie never shows how Grievous captured him in the first place. So here is exactly how General Grievous kidnapped Palpatine before Revenge of the Sith.

Grievous Attacked Coruscant While Anakin and Obi-Wan Were Away
In Labyrinth of Evil, Anakin and Obi-Wan are not on Coruscant when Grievous launches his attack. In fact, Obi-Wan tells Anakin, “We won’t be returning to Coruscant,” because the Separatists have attacked Tythe, a planet connected to the trail the Jedi were following toward Darth Sidious. Palpatine then authorizes a Republic battle group to divert there, pulling Anakin and Obi-Wan away from the capital at the exact moment Coruscant is about to be hit.
Obi-Wan even tells Anakin that if Palpatine truly cared about his safety, he would have kept him closer to Coruscant. But instead, Anakin is away when Grievous brings the war directly to the heart of the Republic. So before the kidnapping happens, the situation is already set: Coruscant is vulnerable, the Jedi are distracted, and two of the Republic’s strongest warriors are nowhere near the Chancellor.
That is how the capture begins. Grievous does not just appear out of nowhere and grab Palpatine. The attack happens after the capital’s strongest defenders have been pulled into another crisis, leaving the Chancellor to be moved through Coruscant while Grievous closes in.
Grievous Used A Hijacked Gunship To Reach The Bunker
As Coruscant falls into chaos, Palpatine is moved toward a secure bunker complex. In Labyrinth of Evil, Shaak Ti is with the Chancellor’s group when their gunships are cleared through the bunker’s shield and given landing vectors. Once Palpatine’s ship touches down, the Red Guards rush him off to a waiting speeder, while clone commandos reinforce the bunker’s defenses.
But Grievous’ plan is already moving at the same time. The Separatists use a hijacked Republic gunship to infiltrate the bunker complex shield by timing its arrival with the ship carrying Palpatine, Shaak Ti, and the others. That is why the attack works. Grievous does not have to smash through the shield from outside. He gets inside by using the confusion of the evacuation itself.
Shaak Ti and Stass Allie stay behind long enough to report their safe arrival to the Jedi Temple, but interference blocks the signal. Because the moment they move away from the ship, the attack begins. The gunship is destroyed, the landing platform erupts into fire, and the troops outside the bunker are thrown into chaos.
Grievous Turned The Bunker Into A Trap
By the time Palpatine is inside the bunker, he is supposed to be safe. But Grievous has already broken that idea. The Separatists get inside the complex by using the same kind of access that brought Palpatine there, and once Grievous reaches the bunker, the safe zone becomes the final trap.
The fight inside is brutal. Mace Windu and Kit Fisto arrive too late and find the tunnel covered with the aftermath of the attack. Commandos have been slaughtered, Red Guards have been cut down, and the Jedi who were defending the Chancellor are dead. Grievous even takes the lightsabers from the Jedi he kills, which makes the whole scene feel like another trophy hunt for him.
Palpatine is still defiant when Grievous has him, but Grievous makes it clear that he is under orders. He tells Palpatine he would kill him then and there “but for my orders,” showing that he does not really understand the full Sith game being played above him. To Grievous, this is a military victory. He has broken into the heart of the Republic and taken its leader alive.
After that, Grievous drags Palpatine out through the south tunnels, cuts through the last troopers on the landing pad, and escapes in a tri-winged shuttle. By the time the Jedi realize what happened, Palpatine is already gone, and Grievous is carrying him toward the Invisible Hand.
