Anakin kneels before Palpatine, pledges himself to the Sith, and receives a name that will terrify the galaxy. But Sidious pauses before saying “Vader,” almost as though he is waiting for something. Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith novelization gives that pause a darker meaning: the name comes as an answer through the Force.
Sidious Consulted the Force Before Naming Vader
The clearest explanation comes from Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith novelization, part of the Legends continuity. It expands the ceremony by describing what happens between Sidious saying “Darth” and announcing “Vader.”
Sidious places a pale hand on Anakin’s brow and welcomes him into the Sith Order. As he begins giving his apprentice a new name, the narration describes “a questioning in the Force,” followed by an answer “dark as the gap between galaxies.” Sidious then speaks the name: Vader.
The passage suggests that Sidious receives the name through the Force during the ceremony. His pause is more than a dramatic flourish; it marks the moment between asking and receiving an answer.
The scene does not identify a voice or spirit speaking to him. Instead, Stover presents a brief, mysterious exchange through the Force, with Sidious delivering the result to his kneeling apprentice.
The Film Shows the Ceremony Without Explaining the Pause
In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin accepts Sidious as his master after helping him kill Mace Windu. Horrified by what he has done and desperate to save Padmé, he commits himself to the Sith.
Sidious announces that Anakin will now be known as Darth Vader, pausing before the final word. Anakin answers, “Thank you, my master.”
The film leaves Sidious’s thoughts unspoken. Stover’s novel supplies the explanation involving the Force, while the movie shows the naming itself.
Anakin becomes Darth Vader before the Jedi Temple attack, his duel with Obi-Wan, and his life inside the black suit. The apprentice who marches into the Temple and later kills the Separatist leaders already carries his Sith name. His injuries and reconstruction happen afterward.
That timing matters because it places his transformation in his choices and allegiance. The armor changes his appearance, but Sidious has already welcomed him as a Sith.
The New Name Marks Anakin’s Surrender to Sidious
Darth is a Sith title, while Vader is Anakin’s individual Sith name. Together, they mark his acceptance as Sidious’s apprentice and his new allegiance.
The ceremony also reinforces the relationship between them. Anakin offers his loyalty, Sidious gives him a new identity, and Anakin thanks him. He accepts his master’s authority because he believes it offers a way to save Padmé, even though Sidious has yet to provide that power.
Read this way, the naming helps Sidious turn Anakin’s desperate decision into a lasting commitment. He immediately treats Anakin as his apprentice and sends him against the Jedi he once served.
Years later, Darth Vader (2015) #6 returns to the ceremony. Palpatine recalls giving Vader his name when he pledged himself to the Sith and challenges him to prove himself worthy again.
The name marks his place beside Sidious, but it offers no security. His master still expects him to defend that position through strength.
Why Was the Name Specifically “Vader”?
Stover explains how the name arrives, but he does not explain why the answer is “Vader.” Sidious gives Anakin no translation and makes no connection between the word and his family, personality, or future.
That leaves a distinction between the ceremony and the meaning of the name. Sidious bestows it, and the Legends novel depicts it arriving through the Force; the reason for those particular syllables remains unexplained.
For Anakin, knowing the meaning is apparently less urgent than securing his master’s help. He accepts the name, rises as Darth Vader, and begins carrying out Sidious’s orders.
