How Force Scream Let Palpatine Defeat 3 Jedi At Once

Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto were Jedi Council members, trained warriors, and experienced enough for Mace Windu to trust them against a Sith Lord.

But once Palpatine attacked, three of them fell almost immediately. The movie shows the speed of the attack, but the expanded version gives another reason the Jedi were overwhelmed.

Was Force scream powerful enough to help Palpatine defeat three of the four Jedi Masters?

Force Scream Was A Dark Side Shockwave

In Legends, it was described as a wave of hatred amplified by the dark side. The scream could smash through mental and physical defenses, which means the target was not only hearing a sound. They were being struck through the Force.

The power usually came from extreme emotion: rage, grief, fear, or frustration. Some dark side users released it without control in their final moments, but stronger users could turn it into an attack.

Canon gives a direct example in Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade. Sometime between 19 BBY and 14 BBY, Tualon Yaluna was broken by the Inquisitorius and brought into its ranks. While sparring with his former friend Iskat Akaris at Inquisitorius Headquarters on Coruscant, Yaluna was wounded in the shoulder by her lightsaber. He answered with a Force scream.

The scream dropped Akaris to the ground in a catatonic state. Even after she managed to stand back up, she could still feel the physical effects in her body, while Yaluna needed time to recover enough mentally to answer her questions.

Yaluna later said the scream felt like something that had been trapped inside him his whole life. Akaris recognized that his connection to the dark side had unlocked it, and she noticed the change it made in his aggression and fighting style.

Palpatine Used It To Break The Jedi Masters’ Guard

In the expanded account of the office duel, Sidious did not begin with a normal lightsaber exchange. We can hear the scream in the scene. Right before Palpatine launches himself across the office, he lets out a sharp, unnatural scream.

When Mace Windu declared him under arrest, Palpatine dropped the Chancellor act, drew his Sith lightsaber, and released the Force scream at the same moment he attacked.

The scream hit before the Jedi could settle into formation.

Agen Kolar was the first to fall. Sidious crossed the distance and impaled him before the arrest team could control the room. Saesee Tiin moved next, but Sidious cut him down almost immediately after Kolar.

The scream did not kill them by itself. It broke their first second of defense. Sidious still needed speed, surprise, and lightsaber skill, but the Force scream gave him the opening.

Kit Fisto lasted longer than Kolar and Tiin. He recovered enough to fight beside Mace, but the four-on-one arrest had already collapsed into a two-on-one duel.

Mace Survived Because He Could Hold The Duel After The Opening Shock

Mace Windu was the only Jedi who survived Palpatine’s opening rush.

Kolar and Tiin were taken out before they could turn the arrest into a real fight. Kit Fisto recovered long enough to stand beside Mace, but he died before Anakin reached the office.

Mace lasted because the first shock did not end his defense. Once the fight moved past Palpatine’s opening scream and sudden attack, Mace could actually meet Sidious blade to blade.

The Revenge of the Sith novelization gives Mace two important advantages. Vaapad let him face the darkness Sidious was throwing at him, but Mace later admitted Vaapad alone was not enough to overpower the Sith Lord. His shatterpoint ability gave him the opening.

That shatterpoint was Anakin.

By the time Anakin entered the office, the fight was no longer four Jedi trying to arrest a Sith Lord. It was Mace holding Sidious at blade point while Anakin became the weakness both sides were fighting over.
