Grogu, better known as Baby Yoda, was born in 41 BBY and was 50 years old when The Mandalorian rolled around in 9 ABY. The Sequel Trilogy also took place between 34 and 35 ABY, placing Grogu at 76 during the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
Did Grogu appear in any of the Star Wars movies during his lifetime since he was technically alive for all of them? He did not.
However, we know where Grogu was in a few movies, so consider him an unseen character from the Prequel Trilogy onward. Grogu also made appearances in non-canon LEGO Star Wars shorts.
Table of Contents
1 – The Prequel Trilogy
Born in 41 BBY, the Jedi Order raised Grogu in the Jedi Temple when Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi discovered Anakin Skywalker.
When Ahsoka Tano felt Grogu’s thoughts through the Force, she discovered many Jedi Masters worked with him.
While we don’t know who these Masters were, it’s possible Yaddle worked with Grogu as she stepped down from the Jedi High Council following The Phantom Menace.
It’s also possible Grogu worked with Yoda, given the brief recognition Grogu once showed when he heard the name.
Theories exist regarding Grogu’s birth, with some fans believing Yoda and Yaddle are Grogu’s parents. Yaddle’s absence from the Jedi High Council in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith further builds on this speculation.
During Revenge of the Sith, we know he was in the Jedi Temple when Darth Vader led the 501st Legion of Clone Troopers into the building.
Grogu hid, witnessing Vader and the 501st Legion slaughter Jedi Younglings. Following the attack, someone took Grogu into hiding. It’s possible Yaddle was the Jedi that did this in Star Wars Canon since her fate remained unknown following Order 66.
Between 19 and 0 BBY, Grogu remained hidden. We have no idea what happened to him during this time period. As Ahsoka Tano stated in The Mandalorian that his memory grew dark when she was trying to communicate with him.
2 – The Original Trilogy
A member of Yoda’s species, Grogu was still an infant in the species’ age when Order 66 occurred in 19 BBY. During the Original Trilogy, which began in 0 ABY, Grogu turned 41 years old.
Throughout the Original Trilogy, Grogu, despite his young age, managed to conceal his Force powers and remain hidden.
However, sometime between 4 ABY and 9 ABY, a Nikto encampment captured him. And it was in 9 ABY, five years following Return of the Jedi, did Grogu make his first on-screen appearance in The Mandalorian.
3 – Snowflake Snack
The short film involved Grogu starring alongside Din Djarin. Grogu used the Force to let himself outside while Djarin was still asleep, Inside the Razor Crest Starship.
To young Force-sensitive’s amazement, snow fell. He successfully caught a snowflake then used the Force to create a large snowball. However, given his relative inexperience with snow, he dropped it on himself.
Believing Grogu went missing, Djarin bolted from his starship. After spotting a set of pointy ears sticking out of the snow, he discovered the young Force-sensitive buried.
After handing Grogu a smaller snowball, he carried the foundling back into the starship. However, Grogu secretly used the Force to levitate his earlier snowball into the ship.
4 – Trick-or-Treat
Din Djarin stole a Lambda-class shuttle and fled Slave I pursuers. After a group of TIE fighters interfered, Djarin crash-landed onto a base and crossed a stormtrooper in one of the blocks.
After the trooper handed Djarin sweets, he crossed a block where a group of troopers gathered for a Halloween party. In the third block, he stumbled across Moff Gideon and a captured Grogu.
Grogu helped himself to candy while Djarin engaged in a duel with Gideon. While Gideon wielded the Darksaber, Djarin abandoned his blaster for a beskar spear. Djarin gained the upper hand, forcing Gideon to flee, rescuing Grogu.
5 – Ghost Ship
A third LEGO Star Wars short involving Grogu and Din Djarin. During a card game between Gideon and stormtroopers, something disrupted the game when their furniture levitated.
Realizing something was off, Gideon retrieved his dark saber and led the stormtroopers from the room. After something forced weapons from their hands, Gideon and the stormtroopers came face-to-face with a hooded figure that turned out to be Grogu.
Din Djarin appeared, and the imperials tried to apprehend the duo, but Grogu used the Force to fight off the stormtroopers, granting him and Djarin time to flee Gideon’s ship.
6 – LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special
In this short, Grogu plays a tiny role when he interrupts Rey Skywalker’s duel with Darth Vader. As the two trade blows with one another, they realize Grogu is nearby and compliment his cuteness.
7 – Grogu May Appear in Future Star Wars Movies
As a fan favorite, expect Grogu to appear in a future Star Wars movie. There are two potential options here:
- A new Star Wars Trilogy.
- A move involving The Mandalorian.
- More LEGO Star Wars shorts.
There is always the possibility Disney will create another trilogy that will probably involve Rey Skywalker building a new Jedi Order. But one that avoids the mistakes of the past that led to the Order’s downfall.
If this is the case, Grogu may find himself making a cameo, either as an ally or an opponent to the Jedi.
The more likely scenario involves any potential Mandalorian movie. Grogu is a shoo-in to make his theatrical appearance in this scenario since he is part of the show’s main cast.
Conclusion
While Grogu did not appear in any of the Star Wars films, we know he was an unseen character training in the Jedi Temple during The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.
Despite his absence in the films, Grogu appeared in LEGO Star Wars shorts with Din Djarin.
Grogu may not have appeared in any of the Star Wars movies to date. But he may appear in a future film. Whether it involves a potentially new trilogy, or a film involving The Mandalorian.
