The Horrifying Origin of Darth Vader’s Face Scars

When Luke removes Darth Vader’s mask in Return of the Jedi, his father’s face is covered in severe wounds.

A deep scar runs beneath his left eye, while several uneven marks cross his bald head. Because Vader spent more than twenty years hunting Jedi and fighting across the galaxy, it would be easy to assume that these injuries came from battles he fought after becoming a Sith Lord.

However, the scars were already present before Vader’s armor was sealed around him.

They came from the injuries that nearly killed Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, while Legends revealed that some of the damage was made even worse by the emergency surgery required to keep him alive.

The Scars Were Already Visible After Mustafar

During his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, Anakin lost his remaining organic limbs and fell beside the lava river.

The intense heat ignited his clothing and left most of his body severely burned. By the time Darth Sidious found him, Anakin’s skin had been destroyed, his lungs had been damaged, and he could no longer survive without immediate medical treatment.

Revenge of the Sith briefly shows the injuries that would later become Vader’s facial scars.

As Anakin burns beside the lava, the skin across his face and head is visibly damaged. When he is later placed on the operating table, the wound beneath his left eye and the deep marks running over his skull can already be seen.

Those injuries closely match the scars revealed when Luke removes Vader’s mask in Return of the Jedi.

This means they were not caused by Ahsoka Tano cutting through Vader’s helmet in Star Wars Rebels. They also did not come from Obi-Wan breaking the other side of his mask years later.

Both of those encounters exposed the face beneath the armor, but Vader had carried the scars since Mustafar.

The official Star Wars Databank describes Vader as being permanently scarred by his defeat there. The fire did not merely damage the surface of his skin. It left him with injuries severe enough that his armor had to regulate his breathing, protect his damaged body, and keep him alive.

However, Legends revealed that the fire may not have been responsible for every mark across his head.

Emergency Surgery Made the Damage Even Worse

James Luceno’s Legends novel Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader takes place shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith and describes Vader adjusting to life inside his armor.

The novel refers to the ragged scars running across his hairless head and explains that they came partly from what he endured on Mustafar and partly from emergency trephination performed during the journey back to Coruscant.

Trephination is a medical procedure in which an opening is made in the skull. It can be used to relieve pressure caused by swelling, bleeding, or serious head trauma.

The implication is that Vader’s injuries were even worse than the movie directly shows.

After Sidious discovered him beside the lava river, Anakin was not simply placed aboard the shuttle and transported safely to the medical center. His condition was so critical that emergency treatment had to begin while they were still traveling.

Medical droids apparently had to operate on his skull aboard Sidious’s shuttle just to keep him alive long enough to reach Coruscant.

In Legends, the scars across Vader’s head were therefore created by a combination of the fire on Mustafar, the physical trauma caused by his fall, and the emergency surgery performed before his armor was installed.

That also helps explain why the scars do not resemble ordinary burns. Some appear deep, uneven, and surgical because they were not all created by the flames.

Anakin’s Right-Eye Scar Was a Separate Injury

The large scars on Vader’s unmasked face should not be confused with the thin vertical scar Anakin already had over his right eye in Revenge of the Sith.

That wound existed before his fall to the dark side and had nothing to do with Mustafar.

Current canon has never given the eye scar a confirmed origin. Anakin simply appears with it at the beginning of the movie.

Legends did provide an explanation in Star Wars: Republic #71.

During a lightsaber duel on Coruscant, Asajj Ventress cut Anakin across the right eye. The injury left the scar visible throughout Revenge of the Sith and remained faintly visible beneath the additional damage he later suffered as Vader.

George Lucas himself apparently did not create a detailed explanation for the scar during production. When visual-effects supervisor John Knoll asked how Anakin received it, Lucas jokingly suggested that he had slipped in the bathtub and said the expanded universe could explain it later.

That is exactly what the Republic comic eventually did.

Vader’s face therefore carried injuries from two separate periods of Anakin Skywalker’s life.

The thin scar across his right eye came from a battle fought during the Clone Wars in Legends. The much larger wounds across his face and skull came from Mustafar and, according to Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, the emergency surgery required to prevent him from dying before he ever received the armor.

Darth Vader’s scars were not marks collected during decades of serving the Empire.

They were permanent evidence of the night Anakin Skywalker was destroyed and rebuilt into something that could survive only inside a machine.
