The Woman Darth Vader Refused to Kill With His Lightsaber

Darth Vader had killed Jedi, Rebels, Imperial officers, and anyone else who threatened his plans. But Doctor Aphra managed to get close enough to learn secrets that almost no one outside his inner circle knew.

She helped Vader build a private army, investigate Luke Skywalker, and operate behind Emperor Palpatine’s back. Then she betrayed him directly to his Master.

Aphra knew Vader would kill her if her plan failed. She only asked that he make it quick and use his lightsaber.

Vader refused.

Instead, he threw her into space. Somehow, that still was not the end of Doctor Aphra. Her story across Marvel’s Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra comics shows how one archaeologist repeatedly survived the personal wrath of the most feared man in the Empire.

Doctor Aphra Was Pulled Into Vader’s Secret Operation

Doctor Aphra first appeared in Marvel’s canon Darth Vader #3 from 2015, written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Salvador Larroca.

The series takes place shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star. Palpatine blamed Vader for failing to protect the station and placed him beneath Grand General Tagge while testing possible replacements for him.

Vader responded by quietly building resources of his own. He encountered Aphra while she was recovering the Triple-Zero protocol personality matrix, which could transform an ordinary protocol droid into a murderous interrogation machine. Aphra was an archaeologist, thief, and expert in dangerous droid technology, making her exactly the kind of person Vader needed for missions he could not connect to the Empire.

Vader recruited her in Darth Vader #3 and helped her activate Triple-Zero aboard her ship, the Ark Angel. Triple-Zero then awakened BT-1, a heavily armed astromech designed for assassination and destruction. With Aphra and the two droids working for him, Vader had the beginning of his own private crew.

Aphra helped him acquire a secret droid army on Geonosis and steal resources without revealing what he was doing to other Imperial officers. She also became involved in Vader’s search for the Rebel pilot who had destroyed the Death Star.

That investigation eventually led Aphra to Naboo, where she uncovered information about Padmé Amidala and discovered the identity of the pilot Vader was hunting.

Luke Skywalker was Anakin Skywalker’s son.

Aphra now knew that Vader was secretly searching for Luke, building forces outside Imperial command, and preparing himself for the possibility of challenging Palpatine. The more useful she became, the more dangerous her knowledge became.

Aphra Tried to Betray Vader Before He Could Kill Her

Aphra understood that Vader would eventually remove her as a loose end.

After she was captured by the Rebel Alliance during the Vader Down crossover, Vader secretly placed a bounty on her. Although Aphra escaped from Sunspot Prison, she knew that returning to him would probably end with her death.

Her last attempt to survive came in Darth Vader #25, the conclusion of Kieron Gillen’s 2015 comic series.

Aphra entered Palpatine’s throne room and exposed the secret operations she had conducted for Vader. She revealed that his apprentice had built independent military resources, deceived Imperial officers, and worked against his Master’s authority.

However, she kept Vader’s most important secret from Palpatine: Luke’s identity.

Aphra expected the Emperor to punish Vader for betraying him. Instead, Palpatine was pleased.

The Emperor viewed Vader’s actions as proof that his apprentice still possessed ambition. Betrayal between Sith was not an unexpected crime. It was part of their relationship. Vader had secretly rebuilt his power, defeated Palpatine’s possible replacements, and returned stronger than before.

Aphra’s revelation restored Vader’s position instead of destroying it.

Once Palpatine dismissed them, Vader escorted Aphra toward an airlock.

Earlier in their partnership, Aphra had asked that if Vader eventually killed her, he should do it quickly with his lightsaber. In Darth Vader #25, she reminded him of that request and begged him to honor it.

Vader opened the airlock instead.

He forced Aphra inside and launched her into space, deliberately denying her the quick death she had requested.

Vader believed she was dead.

But Aphra had always expected him to turn against her. She had prepared a rescue plan involving Black Krrsantan, Triple-Zero, and BT-1, who recovered her after she was expelled from the ship.

Her survival was revealed at the end of Darth Vader #25, setting up Marvel’s first ongoing Doctor Aphra comic series.

Vader Found Her Alive at Accresker Jail

Aphra remained hidden from Vader for a time, but her luck eventually ran out.

In the Doctor Aphra storyline “The Catastrophe Con,” covering issues #20 through #25 of the 2016 series, Aphra was imprisoned aboard Accresker Jail. The massive mobile Imperial prison transported inmates between battlefields and used them as expendable soldiers.

Imperial officer Magna Tolvan eventually revealed that Aphra was still alive.

Vader personally boarded Accresker Jail in Doctor Aphra #25. He cut through the prisoners standing between him and Aphra, while she desperately tried to create another way out.

Aphra used a Bor gullet named Bor Ifriem to alter Tolvan’s memories. Tolvan was made to believe that she had killed Aphra herself.

When Vader reached them, Tolvan reported Aphra’s death. Vader accepted the explanation, and the Empire later sent Accresker Jail crashing into the planet Tiferep.

Aphra escaped the destruction, leaving Vader to believe she had died for a second time.

She had not defeated him through strength. She survived by ensuring that someone Vader trusted remembered a death that had never happened.

Imperial Politics Forced Vader to Keep Her Alive

Aphra eventually placed herself in danger again when she betrayed Rebel plans to the Empire. Through a series of manipulations, she secured an Imperial pardon and helped expose an assassination attempt against Palpatine.

Instead of being executed, she was rewarded with a position among the Empire’s archaeological consultants aboard the Executor.

That placed her directly under Vader’s supervision.

Vader now knew she was alive, but he could not immediately kill someone whom the Imperial government had pardoned and declared useful. He was forced to use her knowledge while waiting for her to fail.

The story is told in the final arc of the first Doctor Aphra series, “A Rogue’s End,” spanning issues #37 through #40.

Aphra and the Imperial archaeological team searched ancient locations for evidence of hidden Rebel bases. Through Magna Tolvan, Aphra eventually learned that the Rebel Alliance was establishing its new base on Hoth.

Giving Vader the real location might have protected her temporarily, but it would also have condemned Tolvan and the Rebels with her.

Aphra decided to deceive him again.

Aphra Led Vader into a Trap on Tython

In Doctor Aphra #40, Aphra claimed that the Rebel base was located on Tython rather than Hoth.

She led Vader into an ancient structure containing a Force confessional built from kyberite. The chamber had absorbed the pain, guilt, and spiritual suffering of generations of Force-users who had entered it.

That accumulated energy temporarily disrupted Vader’s connection to the Force.

Triple-Zero and BT-1 attacked him while he was weakened, but they were not responsible for weakening his powers. The Force confessional itself created the effect.

Even without his full connection to the Force, Vader continued fighting through the temple and destroying everything Aphra placed in his path.

Aphra used the brief opportunity to connect to the systems controlling his mechanical suit. Through Vader’s authorization, she accessed Imperial communications and ordered the Empire to alter or delete information gathered by probe droids searching for the Rebel base.

She could not permanently hide Hoth from Vader, but scrambling the records bought the Rebel Alliance more time to strengthen its defenses and prepare an evacuation plan.

Aphra then escaped Tython before Vader fully recovered.

She had now survived being thrown into space, being hunted through Accresker Jail, and facing Vader directly inside an ancient Jedi structure.

Doctor Aphra was never more powerful than Darth Vader. Every time they confronted each other, the comic made it clear that she could not defeat him in a direct fight.

What kept her alive was her ability to prepare for the moment when Vader inevitably turned against her.

She arranged a rescue before he opened the airlock. She planted a false memory before he reached her at Accresker Jail. And on Tython, she chose a location that could briefly weaken him long enough for her to sabotage the Imperial search for Hoth.

Aphra once begged Darth Vader to kill her quickly with his lightsaber. He refused because he wanted her death to be slower and more terrifying. Instead, he gave her exactly what she needed: enough time to escape him again.
