Most First Order TIE pilots wore identical black armor and flew as part of larger squadrons. Major Elrik Vonreg and the Banshee of Bestine were different.
Both were elite aces with personalized armor, specialized interceptors and enough skill to threaten some of the Resistance’s best pilots.
The First Order’s Red Baron
Major Baron Elrik Vonreg wore distinctive crimson flight armor and flew a matching crimson TIE interceptor. The color immediately separated him from the First Order’s standard black-and-gray pilots before he even entered a fight.
His ship was a TIE/ba Baron Space Superiority Interceptor rather than an ordinary line fighter. It was a high-end craft reserved for an elite pilot, with the speed and maneuverability needed to hunt advanced New Republic and Resistance starfighters.
The official Star Wars Databank describes Vonreg as an elite First Order operative who reported directly to Captain Phasma. His rank, specialized fighter and connection to Phasma placed him much closer to First Order command than an ordinary TIE pilot.
Vonreg demonstrated that reputation from his first appearance in Star Wars Resistance. He pursued Kazuda Xiono’s T-85 X-wing and damaged it badly enough that Poe Dameron had to intervene. Even then, Poe and Kaz had to work together to land a hit on his interceptor and force him to retreat.
He later operated around the Colossus during the First Order’s campaign to pressure Captain Doza into accepting its protection. Vonreg was not simply another pilot assigned to patrol the station. He served as the First Order’s most recognizable ace, appearing whenever its officers needed someone capable of hunting Resistance pilots or enforcing their presence through direct force.
StarWars.com later described him as a “formidable” First Order pilot during his repeated dogfights with Kaz.
Vonreg’s crimson armor and fighter made him look like the First Order’s version of the Red Baron, but his status was not based on appearance alone. He was one of the few First Order pilots trusted to operate independently and confront Resistance aces directly.
The Banshee of Bestine
Poe Dameron first encounters the Banshee of Bestine above Nar Kaaga in Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories – Codebreaker.
Like Vonreg, the Banshee flies a TIE/ba Baron Space Superiority Interceptor, although his fighter is black rather than crimson.
His appearance gives Poe’s squadron a warning before the dogfight even begins. The Banshee wears gray flight armor with red accents, while at least twenty-six tally marks cover his helmet. Each mark represents a confirmed kill he had already claimed before meeting Poe.
In Codebreaker, Poe and BB-8 are sent to Nar Kaaga to recover what the Resistance believes is First Order code-breaking technology.
The target is not a machine.
It is Cheka, a young Muun girl whom the First Order has imprisoned because of her extraordinary ability to break codes. When Poe discovers the truth, he abandons the original mission and decides to rescue her.
The Banshee launches after him.
The fight quickly turns against the Resistance. He destroys two accompanying X-wings and damages Poe’s fighter badly enough that Poe cannot simply outrun or outmaneuver him.
Poe survives by dumping most of his fuel and allowing his X-wing to fall toward Nar Kaaga. The Banshee believes the damaged fighter is crashing and abandons the pursuit, giving Poe the opportunity to make a controlled emergency landing.
Poe does not escape because he proves himself to be the better pilot in that first encounter. He survives because he deceives the Banshee into believing that the fight is already over.
That is what makes the Banshee so dangerous. By the time he appears, Poe is already regarded as one of the Resistance’s greatest pilots, yet their first confrontation ends with Poe sacrificing most of his fuel and faking his own death just to escape.
Vonreg represented the First Order’s military discipline and authority. The Banshee represented something more personal: a pilot who had built his reputation one kill at a time and finally found an opponent capable of surviving him.
