The Tognath already look as if they walked out of the oldest, strangest corner of Star Wars. Their masks, metal tubes, pale armor-like skin, and battered clothing make every piece of equipment seem important. One detail on Edrio Two Tubes stands out even more, a rectangular box worn on his chest that looks suspiciously familiar. Is it related to Darth Vader, or is Star Wars reusing the same visual language for a completely different reason?
First, Make Sure You Are Looking At Edrio
There are two famous Tognath called “Two Tubes,” and that is why images of them are easy to mix up. Edrio Two Tubes is the pilot with the obvious square chest box. Benthic Two Tubes is his eggmate, usually recognized by the long coat and a different arrangement of breathing gear.
Their shared nickname comes from the two corrugated hoses running from the lower part of the face mask. Both men use that basic system, but their outfits are not identical because they perform different jobs. Edrio flew with the Cavern Angels, Saw Gerrera’s small X-wing squadron. Benthic served as a sniper and became one of the Partisans’ leading fighters.
An official Rogue One visual-guide breakdown makes that distinction especially useful. Benthic is the sniper in the long coat, while Edrio is the pilot. Once that is clear, the chest box stops looking like a random copy of Vader’s suit and starts looking like equipment chosen for Edrio’s specific role.
Why Tognaths Need Breathing Equipment
The mask is not there only to make Edrio look threatening. Tognaths evolved on Yar Togna, a high-gravity world with a dense, oxygen-poor atmosphere. Its volcanic environment filled the air with sulfur, ash, and toxic fumes. Conditions away from that world were different enough that traveling Tognaths needed pressure suits and respirators to reproduce something closer to their native atmosphere.
The apparatus allows Tognath physiology to process oxygen atmospheres. It is not simply an oxygen tank for a person who needs more oxygen. The equipment helps an alien adapted to one atmospheric mix survive and operate comfortably in another.
The hoses are the most visible part, so Edrio and Benthic became “Two Tubes.” The chest box appears to belong to Edrio’s larger system, but the story does not isolate its exact job. It may manage some part of the airflow, filtration, pressure, or suit monitoring.
Why It Looks Like Vader’s Chest Panel
The resemblance is real at a broad visual level. Both devices are rectangular boxes mounted high on the torso. Both sit near breathing hardware. Both use simple lights, switches, straps, and exposed connections that suggest the wearer depends on the machine.
Their confirmed functions are not the same, however. Vader’s control function panel and system status belt monitor and regulate vital systems in his helmet. His mask contains the respiratory machinery that helps his badly damaged lungs intake and vent air, while the suit also protects his injured body and manages other life-support needs.
Edrio is not wearing a medical prison built around catastrophic injuries. He is a healthy Tognath using environmental equipment away from his species’ homeworld. Vader needs his armor because his body was burned and mutilated on Mustafar. Edrio needs a respirator because the surrounding atmosphere does not match the conditions for which Tognath biology evolved.
The Stronger Design Link Is Rebel Pilot Gear
Edrio’s box has more in common with the chest units worn by Rebel pilots than with Vader’s famous panel. The detailed costume configuration identifies an X-wing-style box attached by two gray straps, with a third hose running from its lower edge toward equipment carried on the back.
This makes sense because Edrio actually is a pilot. Saw Gerrera’s Partisans are not a polished military with clean, standardized uniforms. Their gear looks repaired, repurposed, and assembled from whatever keeps working. An old or modified pilot component becoming part of Edrio’s breathing setup fits both his profession and the Partisans’ visual identity.
There is still an important line between costume evidence and in-universe fact. The external design can be described confidently as X-wing-style. Canon does not currently state that Edrio took a standard Rebel pilot box, opened it, and converted it into a Tognath oxygen processor.
The Rest Of The Mask Explains The Character
Tognath technology goes beyond breathing. The species frequently used cybernetic enhancements for weak hearing and balance, fitted artificial lenses over their compound eyes, and could graft machinery into their bodies more easily because of their unusual resistance to pain. Their biology includes both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton, which helps explain why their uncovered features already look partly armored.
That combination is why Edrio never appears to be wearing one simple gas mask. His face gear, lenses, tubes, suit, and chest components overlap into a complete offworld support system. Some parts compensate for the atmosphere, while others may improve senses or support his work as a fighter and pilot.
Behind the scenes, the Tognath respirators drew inspiration from gas masks used during the First and Second World Wars. That influence gives the characters the grim “trench fighter in space” quality that suits Saw Gerrera’s people. The chest box then adds the chunky switches and exposed machinery associated with the original trilogy.
Does Every Tognath Wear The Same Box?
No. The clearest proof is Benthic. He needs the same basic kind of atmospheric support and shares the Two Tubes nickname, yet his equipment does not match Edrio’s pilot configuration exactly. His visible hoses connect to a different field setup, and his clothing suits a ground fighter rather than an X-wing pilot.
Tognaths almost universally used technological modifications, but that does not mean they all bought one standard chest unit. Different jobs, planets, resources, and personal needs could produce different combinations of respirators, pressure gear, lenses, and cybernetics. The equipment is common to the species, while the exact costume is individual.
