Jabba the Hutt Was Modeled After a Real Person

Jabba the Hutt Was Modeled After a Real Person

When was the last time we got to see Jabba the Hutt in a Star Wars movie or series?

For me, it was in the non-canon Star Wars Vision 2.

If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it. Jabba the Hutt makes a reappearance in episode 2.

This prompted me to share an interesting fact with all Star Wars fans.

Jabba the Hutt was actually inspired by a Hollywood celebrity.

Intrigued? Without further ado…

The Real-life Inspiration

Jabba the Hutt, for instance, one of the most notorious villains in Star Wars. Would you believe he was modeled after a real person?

That’s right! The inspiration behind Jabba’s unique look was the British actor Sydney Greenstreet.

Sydney Greenstreet

Now, Greenstreet was quite a character himself. He was a big name during the Golden Age of Hollywood, starring in classics like The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca.

Greenstreet had this distinctive look and a knack for playing characters with a certain… let’s say, authority and cunning.

Sounds familiar? Well, that’s because these traits are quite similar to our friend Jabba.

Greenstreet’s commanding presence and unique physical appearance made him the perfect real-life model for our infamous Tatooine crime boss.

The Connection Between Jabba and Greenstreet

Jabba the Hutt and Sydney Greenstreet

So, we’ve established that Sydney Greenstreet was the real-life inspiration for Jabba the Hutt. But how exactly did this inspiration translate into the character we see on screen?

Well, when George Lucas and the Star Wars production team were designing Jabba, they had a very specific vision in mind.

They wanted Jabba to look “alien and grotesque”, but still have a certain charm, much like Greenstreet’s characters.

Remember the fez that Greenstreet wore in Casablanca? It turns out, Jabba was originally supposed to wear a fez too! This is just one of the many ways Greenstreet’s influence can be seen in Jabba’s design.

But it’s not just about the physical appearance.

Greenstreet’s roles often had a certain authority and cunning to them, traits that are very much present in Jabba’s character.

This connection goes to show how real-life inspirations can add depth and complexity to fictional characters.

The Evolution of Jabba’s Character

Jabba the Hutt

In the original Star Wars: A New Hope, Jabba was actually played by a human actor, Declan Mulholland.

There’s a deleted scene where Mulholland plays Jabba as a kind of Irish space pirate. But due to time, budget, and technology constraints, Lucas decided to cut the scene.

Fast forward to 1997, and technology had caught up with Lucas’s vision.

The deleted scene was reinserted into the movie, but this time, Jabba was no longer a human.

He was transformed into the slug-like creature we know today, thanks to the magic of CGI technology.

Since then, Jabba’s character has continued to evolve. He’s appeared in the prequels, the sequels, and even the animated series.

Each appearance adds a new layer to his character, making him one of the most memorable villains in the Star Wars universe.
