The biggest capital ship in Star Wars is not always the best one.
Some ships win by size. Some win by fear. But one canon warship was built with a much smarter idea: take the Empire’s own strength, rebuild it, and use it against them.
It was not made to look impressive in a parade. It was made to drag Imperial giants out of the sky.

Why the New Republic Built the Starhawk
After Endor, the Empire was wounded, but it was not gone. Its fleets still had Star Destroyers, shipyards, commanders, and enough firepower to keep fighting across the galaxy.
The Rebel Alliance had won with fighters, stolen plans, desperate strikes, and capital ships that were often outmatched by Imperial warships. That worked for a rebellion. It was not enough for a government trying to replace the Empire.
The New Republic needed a warship that could stand in front of Imperial capital ships and survive. It also needed something that did not depend on the Empire’s old logic of building bigger symbols of fear.
The official Databank describes the Starhawk as a prototype New Republic battleship built from salvaged Imperial Star Destroyers at a secret location. That detail already makes the ship different. The New Republic was not just copying Imperial power. It was taking the Empire’s own weapons apart and rebuilding them into something made to fight back.
The Starhawk was designed to take on Imperial capital ships and give the New Republic a way to face Imperial fleets on equal terms. It was the perfect post-Endor capital ship: born from the wreckage of the Empire, but built for the side that had survived it.
Why the Starhawk Was More Than a Bigger Rebel Ship
The Starhawk was built from salvaged Imperial Star Destroyers, but it was not just a recycled Star Destroyer with New Republic markings. Its hull had heavy durasteel armor, deflector shields, and multiple turbolaser batteries, giving it the protection and firepower to stay in a capital-ship fight instead of relying on hit-and-run Rebel tactics.
Its main weapon was the tractor beam array. The official Databank says the Starhawk’s tractor beam had ten times the power of a Star Destroyer’s beam. Other sources identify the system as six Magnite Crystal Tractor Beam Arrays, strong enough to seize and hold enemy warships rather than just pull in smaller targets.
That made the ship dangerous against Imperial doctrine. Star Destroyers and Super Star Destroyers were built around mass, armor, and forward firepower. The Starhawk’s tractor beam attacked movement instead. It could grab a capital ship, stop it from maneuvering freely, and leave its engines exposed to the rest of the New Republic fleet.
The Battle of Jakku proved the design worked. The Super Star Destroyer Ravager was protected by Imperial ships, and the Concord took heavy damage when it moved against it. Commodore Kyrsta Agate still used the Starhawk’s tractor beam to latch onto the Ravager, while Ackbar sent ships and fighters to attack the Super Star Destroyer’s engines.
The Ravager was not beaten because the Starhawk was larger. It was beaten because the Starhawk could survive long enough to catch it, hold it, and help strip away the control that made a Super Star Destroyer terrifying.
How the Starhawk Helped End the Galactic Civil War
The Starhawk’s best canon moment came at the Battle of Jakku.
The Empire’s final stand was built around the Ravager, an Executor-class Super Star Destroyer protected by Imperial ships. The New Republic could not simply fly in and destroy it. The Ravager was too large, too heavily armed, and too well defended.
The opening came when the Imperial Star Destroyer Punishment rammed the Starhawk Amity. Both ships were destroyed, but the collision broke a hole in the Imperial formation. Commodore Kyrsta Agate moved the Concord into that gap and went straight at the Ravager.
The Concord was badly damaged by the Ravager’s firepower, but Agate used the Starhawk’s tractor beam to lock onto the Super Star Destroyer. Ackbar then sent New Republic ships and fighters to attack the Ravager’s engines.
That is why the Starhawk belongs in the argument for the best capital ship in canon. It did not beat the Ravager by being larger. It beat it by surviving long enough to take control of the fight. Once the tractor beam caught the Ravager and the engines were hit, the Empire’s largest weapon could not save itself.
The Concord dragged the Ravager down toward Jakku, and both ships crashed into the planet’s surface. The Empire lost its final Super Star Destroyer, and the battle turned toward the New Republic.
