Palpatine spent his life trying to escape death. He studied Sith secrets, chased immortality, used clone bodies, and returned on Exegol through the work of the Sith Eternal. Even when his body was broken, he restored himself by draining life from Rey and Ben.
But that was not the same kind of power Rey and Ben used.
Palpatine could take life to save himself. So what was the one Force power he still could not use?
The Power Palpatine Couldn’t Use Was Force Healing
The clearest way to understand this comes from a Legends example in Shadows of the Empire.
In that story, Vader tried to use the dark side to heal the damage inside his body. He focused on his hatred, especially his hatred of Obi-Wan, and for a moment it worked. His ruined lungs changed, his damaged tissue became functional again, and he could breathe without the help of his chamber.
But it did not last.
The moment Vader felt relief, triumph, and joy from breathing normally again, the dark side slipped away from him. The power that had made his lungs work was fueled by anger and pain. Once the healing gave him peace, the very emotions keeping the dark side active began to disappear.
That is the problem Palpatine could never escape.
The dark side could preserve a body. It could hold broken flesh together through rage, pain, hatred, and willpower. It could keep someone alive long past the point where they should have died.
But that is not true healing.
True healing removes the suffering. Dark side survival depends on suffering. So the more complete the healing becomes, the more it destroys the anger and pain needed to sustain it.
That is why Palpatine’s methods always looked unnatural. He used cloning, possession, life-draining, and Sith science because those methods fit the dark side. They let him take life, extend life, or force life to continue.
Force healing worked against the source of his power.
Palpatine could use the Force to survive death, but he could not use it to truly heal. The dark side could keep a wound open and make it useful. It could not close the wound without losing the very hatred that made the power work.
Palpatine Could Steal Life, But He Could Not Restore It
Palpatine’s body on Exegol was not healed. It was a decaying vessel held together by machines, cloning, Sith science, and unnatural power. He had returned, but he had not returned whole.
When his body was restored, it happened through life-draining. He pulled power from another living source and used it to strengthen himself, which is not Force healing. Force healing gives life outward, while Palpatine’s power pulled life inward. His body improved because he was taking life that did not belong to him.
This is why his methods always needed something outside himself: a clone body, a prepared vessel, a machine, a cult, or another living being to drain. He could not simply close the damage through the dark side, because real healing would remove the pain and suffering the dark side feeds on.
Palpatine could survive death, possess bodies, drain life, and force his broken body to continue, but he could not restore life in the way Force healing does. He could only steal enough life to keep the damage from ending him.
