The Highest-Ranking Clone Trooper of the Republic

The Highest-Ranking Clone Trooper of the Republic

The clone army looked identical from the outside, but inside the Grand Army of the Republic, every clone did not hold the same level of authority.

Some clones were regular troopers. Others became captains, commanders, or senior officers trusted with much larger units. And while names like Rex, Cody, Fives, and Wolffe are all famous, their ranks were not the same.

So who was the highest-ranking clone trooper in the Republic?

Clone Marshal Commander Was The Highest Clone Rank

The highest rank a clone trooper could reach in the Grand Army of the Republic was Clone Marshal Commander.

The basic clone rank structure started with regular clone troopers at the bottom, then moved up through ranks like sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and commander. At the top of that chain was the Clone Marshal Commander, a rank given to some of the most trusted clone officers in the Republic army.

A clone commander could lead an important unit, but a Marshal Commander operated on a much larger level. They were usually placed over a corps-level formation, which means they were responsible for thousands of clone troopers, not just one squad or one small battlefield group.

Commander Cody is the most famous example. His full designation was CC-2224, and he served as a Clone Marshal Commander of the 7th Sky Corps. That force included the 212th Attack Battalion, the orange-marked clone unit that fought under Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Clone Wars. His position placed him above many other famous clones in terms of military rank. Captain Rex, for example, was one of the most beloved and respected clones in the war, but his rank was still Captain, while Cody held a higher command position.

Other high-ranking clones also held Marshal Commander-level roles, including Bacara, who led the 21st Nova Corps, Bly, who led the 327th Star Corps, and Neyo, who commanded the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps. These clones were not just fighting on the front line. They were senior officers trusted to coordinate major Republic forces alongside Jedi Generals.

The rank of Clone Marshal Commander was first mentioned in Guide to the Grand Army of the Republic, an eight-page reference article written by Karen Traviss and Ryan Kaufman for Star Wars Insider #84, published on September 26, 2005.

Cody Outranked Rex In The Republic’s Command Structure

This is where the rank system gets interesting, because Captain Rex is probably the clone most fans think of first. He fought beside Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, led the 501st on countless missions, and became one of the most important clone characters in The Clone Wars.

But strictly by military rank, Rex was still a Captain for most of the war.

Cody, on the other hand, was a Clone Marshal Commander, which placed him much higher in the Grand Army of the Republic’s command structure. Rex usually led troops directly in the field, while Cody’s role was connected to a much larger military formation.

That does not mean Cody was “better” than Rex as a soldier. It just means their positions were different. Rex was a front-line captain closely tied to Anakin’s 501st Legion, while Cody was a senior clone officer trusted with the 7th Sky Corps and the forces under Obi-Wan Kenobi.
