The Only Weapons Forbidden by the Clone Army

The clone army was created to fight the Republic’s war, but there was still one kind of weapon its soldiers were not supposed to use.

It was not rare because it was weak. It was rare because the damage it caused was considered too brutal, even during the Clone Wars. The Republic had armies, gunships, artillery, and entire fleets, but this weapon crossed a different line.

So what weapon was forbidden to the clone army?

Disruptors Gun Were Not Normal Blasters

They worked like blasters on the surface, but the amount of power behind each shot was much higher. A disruptor used large amounts of blaster gas, such as Tibanna gas, far more than a standard blaster needed. The weapon formed its beam in a similar way to a blaster bolt, but the gas went through a different internal transformation before firing.

The result was a short-ranged, unstable, and extremely powerful beam. Instead of simply burning into a target, a disruptor blast released disruptive, nonharmonic energy pulses that attacked the target at the molecular level. It excited the target’s molecules until the bonds holding their atoms together broke apart.

Against a living being, that meant the weapon could vaporize someone in less than a second. A disruptor rifle could disintegrate a humanoid target and leave only ash behind. It was also strong enough to damage solid objects and even starship hulls, though the huge amount of blaster gas it consumed made it inefficient for ship-mounted use.

The weapon had serious limits. Most disruptors were short-ranged, illegal, and only carried enough gas for a few shots. They usually could not fire quickly, and they could not be set to stun. Some disruptor pistols had an overload setting, but using it often damaged the weapon’s own internal parts because it forced even more energy through an already unstable system.

The Republic Banned Them Because The Damage Was Too Cruel

In Legends, disruptor rifles were outlawed under the Republic and tied to crime syndicates, smugglers, assassins, and Mandalorians. Their illegality made them valuable smuggling items, especially in places where the weapons were treated as taboo.

Canon gives the clearest example with the T-7 ion disruptor rifle. StarWars.com says the T-7 could disable starships, and its effect against organic beings was gruesome enough for the Senate to ban it.

Star Wars Rebels puts that ban into Zeb’s history. When the Ghost crew finds a shipment of T-7s, Sabine points out their ship-killing power. Zeb reacts differently because he knows what the Empire did with them on Lasan, where disruptors were used during the slaughter of his people.

The Empire Used Them Anyway

During the Imperial era, T-7 ion disruptor rifles were used to clear worlds and slaughter inhabitants. Lasan became the clearest example. The Empire used disruptors during its takeover of the planet, helping drive the Lasat close to extinction.

Star Wars Rebels brings that history into Zeb’s reaction. When the Ghost crew finds a shipment of T-7s, Zeb immediately recognizes them. Sabine focuses on their ability to short-circuit ships, but Zeb knows what they did to living targets because his people were killed with them.

The Empire was still trying to move banned T-7s through Garel. Amda Wabo had arranged to sell the weapons to the Empire before the Ghost crew disrupted the deal.
