An entire army carried Jango Fett’s face, but his most personal request was for one child. Alongside his payment, he wanted an unaltered clone he could raise as his son. The reason behind that demand becomes much sadder in Star Wars Legends, where years of loss lead to a friend’s dying wish.
Jango Had Already Lost Two Families
Jango Fett: Open Seasons shows how much Jango lost before becoming the clone army’s genetic template.
As a child, he lost his parents to Death Watch. Jaster Mereel took him in, giving him a home among the True Mandalorians. Jango grew up fighting alongside them and eventually became their leader after Jaster’s death.
Then came the Battle of Galidraan.
The planet’s governor and Death Watch framed Jango’s warriors for murdering civilians. A Jedi force led by Dooku, who was still a Jedi Master, arrived to confront them. The encounter turned into a battle that devastated the True Mandalorians.
Jango survived, but the Jedi handed him over to the governor – the same man involved in setting the trap. He was stripped of his armor and sold into slavery.
He eventually escaped, recovered his armor, and killed Death Watch leader Tor Vizsla. But revenge could not bring back Jaster or the warriors he had led. By the time Jango became a successful bounty hunter, he had already seen two families destroyed.

A Friend Asked Him to Find Something Beyond Money
The more direct explanation for Jango’s request comes from the Legends game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.
An employer calling himself Tyranus offered five million credits for the elimination of Komari Vosa, a former Jedi who led the Bando Gora cult. Jango pursued the bounty with help from Rozatta, a Toydarian friend who provided information and helped him find work.
During the hunt, his rival Montross attacked Rozatta and left her mortally wounded. Jango reached her before she died, but he could not save her.
Rozatta’s final request was that he find something to live for besides credits.
That loss gives the cloning deal its emotional weight. Jango could keep taking dangerous jobs and collecting rewards, but Rozatta wanted him to have a reason to live beyond the next contract. When an unusual opportunity arrived, he found a way to honor her wish.
Dooku Offered an Army. Jango Asked for a Son.
After Jango defeated Vosa, Tyranus appeared and revealed that the bounty had been a test. He wanted a warrior capable of becoming the genetic template for a clone army.
Tyranus was Dooku – the same former Jedi who had led the force at Galidraan.
For Dooku, Jango’s survival and fighting ability made him valuable. For Jango, the offer brought a substantial payday and the chance to ask for something money alone had not given him: a family.
He agreed on the condition that he receive one unaltered clone for himself.
Attack of the Clones establishes that same personal demand. Lama Su tells Obi-Wan that, apart from his considerable payment, Jango asked for an unaltered clone.
The army’s soldiers received accelerated growth and modifications to make them more obedient. Boba would grow naturally, giving Jango the years to raise and teach him.
That distinction matters. Jango was agreeing to provide the template for soldiers, but the child he kept would have a different place in his life. Boba called him Dad, lived with him, and learned from him.
Seen alongside Jango’s childhood, the choice carries another meaning. Jaster had once taken in a boy who had lost his parents. Now Jango had someone of his own to raise and pass his skills on to.
His Clones Destroyed the Jedi, but Boba Lost His Father
There is a bitter connection between Galidraan and the army’s eventual purpose. Jedi helped destroy Jango’s adopted community; years later, clones carrying his face helped destroy the Jedi Order.
That makes a striking parallel, but it does not make Order 66 Jango’s confirmed reason for accepting the contract. The personal thread in Bounty Hunter leads to Rozatta’s wish and his request for Boba.

Fatherhood also did not persuade Jango to leave bounty hunting behind. Boba traveled with him and witnessed his violent work, including the pursuit of Obi-Wan over Geonosis.
Then, in the arena, Mace Windu killed Jango during the battle that opened the Clone Wars. Boba watched his father die.
Afterward, the boy knelt in the arena and pressed his forehead against his father’s helmet.
Jango had honored Rozatta’s wish by finding someone to care about beyond money. But he never escaped the dangerous life she wanted him to look beyond. The child who gave him a future was left facing the same loss that had shaped his own childhood.
